Erik ten Hag steps up Man Utd transfer plan after Roy Keane's demand - "Go and get him"

Erik ten Hag is ready to step up his efforts to sign a striker for next season with Harry Kane thought to be their prime target.

Manchester United have lacked a clear No 9 for much of the season, but have managed thanks to the sensational form of Marcus Rashford, who has broken his own record for goals in a single campaign. The Englishman though is seen as more of a wide forward, leaving a hole that needs to be filled centrally.

United's huge outlay in the summer meant they didn't have the funds in January, hence their decision to bring in Wout Weghorst in on loan. They are expected to attack the market in a matter of months though with Kane considering his future at Tottenham.

Roy Keane has previously called on his former side to be decisive in the market and pursue the England captain. He said: "Go and get [Harry] Kane. Just go and get Kane from Spurs, easy. He'll score 20 goals a season with his eyes shut."

Kane has recently become Tottenham's all-time leading goalscorer but, with his contract entering its final 12 months, his trophy cabinet remains bare as he weighs up his next move. United appear to be in the ascendancy under Ten Hag and the Dutchman recently called on more players to contribute in the final third, whilst keeping half an eye on this summer's recruitment.

He said: "I think we have players like Bruno [Fernandes], like Jadon Sancho, like Anthony Martial, like Scott McTominay, like Antony dos Santos, we have enough players with the capabilities to score goals, definitely. What I said previously, I work in the back on next season [for transfers] but we're working now on this season, so first of all make sure everyone is available and keep improving the way of play and that's the best chance of scoring more goals."

United have scored 41 times in the league this term - 30 behind leading scorers and neighbours Manchester City. There has been an over reliance on Rashford with none of his team-mates getting into double figures - Bruno Fernandes is the closest to him with five goals in the league.

The Red Devils have also been linked with the likes of Victor Osimhen at Napoli, who has enjoyed a prolific season, but their preference seems to be a move for Kane, but that would involve negotiating with Tottenham chief Daniel Levy.

The north Londoners are reluctant to let their star man go, especially as they try and attract a new manager. A huge fee will be required, even though Kane can leave for free the following summer, with Levy known to play hard ball in negotiations.
