Erik ten Hag sets Marcus Rashford a new Manchester United challenge

Erik ten Hag believes Marcus Rashford can already be classed as an elite forward, but has told the Manchester United academy graduate not to be satisfied with what he's already achieved.

Rashford scored his 100th goal for the club in the hard-fought 1-0 win against West Ham at Old Trafford, bringing up the milestone the day before his 25th birthday.

The forward has returned to form under Ten Hag's stewardship, with his powerful first-half header the seventh goal he's scored this season and the second time he's found the back of the net with a header.

That area of his game is something Ten Hag has demanded Rashford work on and he believes there is more to come from the player, who must also aspire to win more trophies with United.

"I think he is," Ten Hag replied on whether Rashford is already among the elite. "Before you're 25 already, you've scored 100 goals, you are already there but I think don't be satisfied with that and in the end, it's about how many trophies you win with your club and he can develop his game even more.

"You see now he makes two headers, for instance, and we work a lot on that, I notified him from the start his heading has to improve and he worked on it and you see what's happening. It's also mental, he is much more consistent, reliable and resilient.

"So I'm really happy with that progress. For me, he is already massive, a great player. Still a lot of improvement. Where it ends, I don't know, but it will be fantastic career, I'm sure."

Rashford has been given a new lease of life under Ten Hag, having struggled for the previous 18 months or so under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and then Ralf Rangnick.

His confidence was at a low ebb in the summer, but Ten Hag has worked closely with the forward and is now seeing a more positive approach around the club.

"Come to training and feel happy, smile, enjoy to play football and then work, invest on your capabilities but also your lackness, for instance heading. And you will see the progress, it stimulates you, it motivates you to get even better," said Ten Hag.

"Now he is scoring goals, he is happier, you see the positive in Carrington when he is coming in and it counts for a lot of players for us. With that positive atmosphere, players can progress even more."
