Donny van de Beek could be handed a Manchester United lifeline if Erik ten Hag is appointed as their next boss.
The Ajax boss has long been among the favourites for the role and looks to be nearing a switch to the Premier League. Talks are underway regarding his compensation package as the Red Devils look to conclude their managerial search in the coming weeks ahead of the summer.
Ten Hag will have quite the to-do list if he does take charge and deciding which players to keep and who to let go will be a huge job. Several players have issues with their lack of minutes on the red half of Manchester - one being Van de Beek, who signed from Ajax nearly two years ago.
Van de Beek was an integral figure at Ajax when they made the last four of the Champions League in 2019. Ten Hag masterminded that run, using his compatriot in a variety of roles. The Sun understands that the 24-year-old, who has been forced to head out on loan, will be part of the first-team picture under the potential new boss.
Ten Hag and the versatile star worked together for more than three years, striking up a close relationship. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was the man in charge when United spent £40m to sign Van de Beek, but it quickly became apparent minutes would be at a premium. The Dutchman plays a similar role to talisman Bruno Fernandes, which saw him struggle for starts.
Solskjaer and the club vetoed a summer move away on the basis he would be given more minutes, but that never materialised. Before he headed to Goodison Park Van de Beek was still waiting for a Premier League start, with all eight of his outings coming as a sub.
Should Van de Beek be a regular at Man Utd? Let us know in the comments
There is no doubt that Ten Hag is a fan of the United outcast. Van de Beek played 94 times in all competitions in his final two years in the Netherlands. Prior to his departure the 52-year-old said: "Donny has become an absolute star for us. He has developed into a modern midfielder, with depth, goals and a strong transition to both sides."
Since moving to Everton Van de Beek has played six times but has quickly left an impression on Frank Lampard despite the Toffees struggling. He said: "I'm really impressed. On a professional level, since speaking to him and coming and seeing him train and play, absolutely impressed with his fitness, his game sharpness."
Ten Hag may have to deal with several others players who have issues with their lack of game time amid reports they are seeking an Old Trafford exit. Dean Henderson, Eric Bailly and Anthony Martial have all been used sparingly and will no doubt seek clarity on their futures.
