Erik ten Hag's decision to snub Man Utd transfer after 'cancelling agent visit' backfires

Erik ten Hag's tenure at Manchester United is still very much in its infancy, but already, his decisions are being heavily scrutinised in the wake of the club's nightmare start to the season.

The Red Devils are currently rock-bottom of the Premier League after back-to-back defeats against Brighton and Brentford, who cantered to an emphatic 4-0 win over United at the weekend.

It was a sobering afternoon for Ten Hag, who has now made the worst start of any Reds boss in over a century - and the spotlight is now firmly on one of the Dutchman's primary summer transfer targets after Lisandro Martinez was hauled off after just 45 minutes at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Martinez was pursued by Ten Hag after playing a starring role in Ajax's Dutch title triumph last year, but the 5ft 9in centre-half has made an uninspiring start to life on these shores.

The former Ajax man was fortunate to not concede a penalty against Brighton last week, while he struggled to cope with the power and presence of Ivan Toney and was promptly withdrawn from proceedings after being relentlessly bullied by the Brentford frontline in the capital.

Ten Hag was adamant that Martinez was the man to shore up Manchester United's fractured defence - so much so that he overruled the Old Trafford hierarchy and snubbed a move for Villarreal's Pau Torres, who had been identified as a potential summer target.

Join the debate! Do you think Ten Hag made a mistake snubbing Torres for Martinez? Let us know here.

United were so sold on Torres - who has been courted by a host of top European clubs over the summer - that a deal had already been 'discussed and negotiated' with the 25-year-old's representatives, who were ready to jet into the UK to conclude a deal.

However, Ten Hag halted the move and insisted that the club should instead pursue a move for Martinez, who eventually sealed a switch to Old Trafford in a deal that could reach a whopping £55.3million.

And even though it's still very early in Martinez's United career, it already looks as though Ten Hag's decision to snub Torres could come back to haunt him.

There were concerns that Martinez could struggle as a centre-half in the Premier League due to his diminutive frame and the 24-year-old's torrid start to life in the top-flight has down little to quell those fears.

After just two league games, Gary Neville has already shared his doubts over Martinez's ability to cope with the rigours of English football in a flat back-four, suggesting that Ten Hag may have to embrace a three-man defence if he does decide to persist with Martinez as a centre-half.

Whether or not Ten Hag will choose to alter his ideology is unclear, but what cannot be disputed is that, as things stand, the United chief will be left red-faced unless Martinez improves drastically - and quickly.
