Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has spoken about his desire for his teams to attack and defend with 11 players, a few short months after Cristiano Ronaldo left Old Trafford by mutual agreement.
Ronaldo rejoined United in the summer of 2021 and finished as top scorer in his first season with the club. However, it quickly became clear that the veteran would not be an automatic starter under Ten Hag after the Dutchman's arrival in the dugout.
Former Ajax boss Ten Hag has shed more light on his approach, which has already delivered United their first trophy since 2017. Victory in the Carabao Cup final was achieved without Ronaldo, and it allowed Ten Hag to put his style on display.
"Of course I have a certain philosophy, and one thing is I want to play attacking," Ten Hag told former United star Robin van Persie in a BT Sport interview. "I want to play proactive. It's not about the way you want to play, but the players - they decide and they dictate the philosophy of how you play.
"You have to adapt, definitely, but for instance for me, now football is about attacking with 11 players and defending with 11 players. So, if you ask me about full-backs, you find them sometimes in positions you don't expect them. That's what I like, I'm looking for that type of player."
Even before Ronaldo left the club, the Portugal international didn't appear to fit into Ten Hag's plans. He started just four Premier League games, while a goal against Everton in October was the only one he scored in the top flight this season..

After allowing Ronaldo to leave in November, United announced the loan signing of Wout Weghorst in January and the Dutch international has been a regular feature in Ten Hag's side. Ronaldo, meanwhile, has continued his career in Saudi Arabia with Al-Nassr.
"In Europe, my work is done," the former Juventus and Real Madrid star said upon being unveiled at his new club. "I had many offers in Europe, many in Brazil, Australia, the US, even in Portugal. Many clubs tried to sign me but I gave my word to this club, for the opportunity to have not only football but (to be) part of this amazing country. And for me, it was a challenge.
"I am fortunate that I have won everything I set out to win in European football. I feel now that this is the right moment to share my experience in Asia."
After a slow start, the veteran has found some form in front of goal in Saudi Arabia. He has eight goals in just seven league appearances, including hat-tricks against Al-Wehda and Al-Batin, with Al-Nassr continuing to battle it out for the league title.
