Erik ten Hag reveals what Manchester United took away from 6-3 loss to Man City

Erik ten Hag believes he and his Manchester United players learned valuable lessons in defeat during Sunday's Manchester derby.

It was a poor performance from the Reds that saw familiar failings rear their ugly heads once more. United were 4-0 down at half time with Erling Haaland and Phil Foden both grabbing a brace.

Both men would go on to complete their hat-tricks in the second 45 as the Blues enjoyed a comfortable victory. A small consolation for United was they showed some fight after the break which was missing earlier in the season when they were trounced by Brentford.

Antony notched his second goal in as many Premier League matches while Anthony Martial scored twice off the bench. Overall though it was a disappointing afternoon for those of a red persuasion.

Ahead of Thursday night's trip to Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League, Ten Hag explained what he brought away from the humbling defeat at the Etihad.

"We played a good opponent," he told club media. "They gave us some lessons but we have to face that we didn’t play well on Sunday. We did that, we took that and then we take the lessons and then we have to do better in the future."

United and their manager will be hoping for the ideal response on Thursday in Cyprus. The Reds currently sit second in Group E, three points behind Real Sociedad who have a 100 per cent record to date.
