Erik ten Hag reveals Manchester United 'are talking' with FA over Alejandro Garnacho social media post

Erik ten Hag has insisted he is not concerned about the possibility of Alejandro Garnacho receiving a ban for using gorilla emojis in a social media post.

The FA have contacted Garnacho to discuss the deleted post, which had the emojis alongside a photo of him and other Manchester United players celebrating with Andre Onana after the goalkeeper's penalty save against Copenhagen.

Onana has since taken to social media himself to defend Garnacho, stating that "the matter should go no further", but Garnacho is still facing facing the prospect of a ban and fine.

Asked on Friday whether he feared losing Garnacho, Ten Hag said at his press conference: "Not in this moment.

"We are talking with FA to see what can confirm that. I want to emphasise that we are together and united and you have seen the post of Andre Onana."

Onana's penalty save proved to be the final touch of the match against Copenhagen, as the goalkeeper ensured his side held on for all three points in a pivotal Champions League win.

It came after Ten Hag warned Onana that he had to step up after an error-strewn start to his United career, and the Dutchman still wants to see much more from his goalkeeper.

"He has high expectations from himself," Ten Hag said.

"We give him the confidence - 'look what you did in the past for great clubs in great leagues, you have the ability and the skills'.

"The last two games were good progress, now we have to keep this going. It’s very good but at Manchester United good is not good enough."

United host rivals Manchester City in a derby clash on Sunday, knowing they will move just three points behind Pep Guardiola's side if they can earn a win at Old Trafford.

It is now three wins in a row for United across all competitions, even if performances have not been hugely convincing, and Ten Hag is glad to see a resilient quality return to his side.

"You see we are back where we wanted to be," the United boss said.

"This is a hard team to beat, they find a way to win. So we are going in the right direction."
