Erik ten Hag restores Man Utd tradition after embarrassed players made request to board

Much has improved in the red half of Manchester under Erik ten Hag during the Dutchman's debut campaign and as a result, his players are set to be rewarded.

For more than a decade, Manchester United would host a glitzy end-of-season Player of the Year ceremony at Old Trafford. The event is deisgned to honour the efforts of the club's most outstanding players at first-team and youth level and is traditionally held in the last fortnight of the campaign.

However, last year - in the wake of United's worst season in Premier League history, the club opted to scrap the ceremony due to the poor performances of the first-team, who were then under the guidance of interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

It is believed that at the time, the players were too embarrassed to host the ceremony given how badly things had gone on the pitch and asked the board to cancel it. United's crop were even against the idea of the awards being handed out, despite the fact there had already been a two-year hiatus due to Covid.

What a difference a year makes. With Ten Heg at the helm, the Carabao Cup already secured and a date with locals rivals Manchester City in the FA Cup final on the way, the Player of the Year awards ceremony is back at Old Trafford.

The gala dinner will take place at Old Trafford on Monday, May 29 for the first time since 2019. In terms of awards on offer this, all of the men's first-team Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year, Women's Player of the Year and Goals of the Season for both sides.

Trophies will also be on offer to the standout players across United's youth teams and girl's academy.

The fact that the ceremony is even going ahead is a testament to the kind of progress United have made with Ten Hag at the helm this season.

The Red Devils could well end the campaign with two trophies and a place in next season's Champions League.

To secure their top-four finish, United will have to hold their nerve in the face of an in-form Liverpool side waiting in the wings aiming to capitalise on any slip-ups from Ten Hag's troops.

The Reds have won seven games on the bounce but all United need to do is win two of their remaining three games left this term and their fate is secure.

Up next is a visit to Bournemouth, before successive home games against a struggling Chelsea and another west London-based outfit in Fulham on the final day of the season.
