Erik ten Hag responds to Eric Bailly claims as Alex Telles explains Manchester United exit

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines for Thursday, September 8.

Ten Hag responds to Bailly claim

Erik ten Hag insists nationality is irrelevant when it comes to his team selection process at Manchester United.

United defender Eric Bailly, on a season-long loan at Marseille, said in an interview with The Times the club "favour English players" but "Ten Hag has a lot of character and I hope he can change that dynamic".

Bailly, 27, played 113 times for United across six seasons, averaging fewer than 20 appearances per season. It was reported last season the Cote d'Ivoire international specifically resented the privileges captain Harry Maguire enjoyed.

And United boss Erik ten Hag has now responded to the defender's claims during his Europa League pre-match press conference ahead of the match against Spanish outfit Real Sociedad.

Telles explains United exit

Alex Telles says he sought a loan move to Sevilla from Manchester United so he could have a better shot at securing his place in the Brazil squad for this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.

The left-back has been included in Tite’s plans throughout 2022 but is not a regular starter, sitting behind Alex Sandro of Juventus and Guilherme Arana, who plays in the country’s domestic league.

The arrival of Tyrell Malacia at United this summer painted an ominous picture for Telles, who was already below Luke Shaw in the left-back pecking order. Erik ten Hag even played the 29-year-old at centre-half where he struggled to find his feet.

And after moving to Sevilla on loan for the season, Telles has now explained his decision.
