Erik ten Hag on course for double reunion as Man Utd rebuild takes shape

Erik ten Hag is reportedly on course to get his Manchester United revolution underway by reuniting with two of his old Ajax players.

The Dutchman has been charged with turning around the Red Devils' fortunes after a disastrous season saw them miss out on qualification for the Champions League. That overhaul has already begun, with 11 players leaving Old Trafford at the end of their contracts, including Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard.

A large-scale revamp of the squad is expected, with many stars having failed to live up to expectations last term. Midfield is thought to be the priority area for Ten Hag this summer, with that being the biggest position of weakness following the free transfer departures.

And to boost his options in that area, Ten Hag is now closing in on the signing of Frenkie de Jong. The midfielder starred under Ten Hag at Ajax, earning himself a £64million move to Barcelona in 2019.

According to talkSPORT, those links are now set to see De Jong make the switch to Old Trafford. It is stated that Ten Hag's 'desire' to be reunited with the midfielder is 'likely' to convince him to leave Barca.

Talks have progressed so much that De Jong is now said to be seen as a 'definite' arrival at Ten Hag's new-look United. And if he completes the move as expected, he is set to be joined at the Red Devils by another of Ten Hag's former Ajax troops.

The report states that forward Antony is also being lined up for a move to the Red Devils, with Cavani's exit leaving a gap up-front. The Brazilian starred for Ten Hag at Ajax last term, scoring 12 goals and notching 10 assists in all competitions.

He has only been in Amsterdam since February 2020, but he is now closing in on a move to United. The 22-year-old is said to have 'massively impressed' since swapping Sao Paulo for the Netherlands.

And Ten Hag is now 'on course' to bring him to Manchester, with a £40m bid being lined up. United are said to be 'failing to distance' themselves from making a move for the Brazilian international.

United's new boss is said to 'clearly trust' the duo and believes that he can 'get the best' out of them if his moves are successful. There is confidence that United will be able to land both De Jong and Antony, which will be major steps on the way to Ten Hag rebuilding the struggling giants.

Antony's arrival will add another winger to United's squad, which could present problems for Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford. Both of the English attackers struggled last season, with Antony appearing to be a potential replacement out wide.
