Erik ten Hag makes Sir Alex Ferguson rule change for Manchester United players

Erik ten Hag ordered all Manchester United players into training by 9am on Tuesday in a throwback to the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

Although two groups of players arrived at 9.30am and 11.30am for the first day of pre-season on Monday, the Manchester Evening News understands all of the players reported before 9am this morning.

A source said: "All in by 9am, an hour earlier than normal. Fergie Time."

Ten Hag was driven into Carrington just gone 8am but his assistant Steve McClaren, Ferguson's right-hand man between 1999-2001, arrived at 7.45am.

United players reported for training at 10am under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, whose management was described as "soft" by some dressing room sources.

Ten Hag is a renowned disciplinarian and there were several issues with the attitude of some players in the United squad last season, with the dressing room described as "a disaster" by Jesse Lingard. Another dressing room source said it was "toxic".

Ten Hag turned up at United's Carrington training complex at 8am on Monday morning, followed by assistants McClaren and Mitchell van der Gaag. Ten Hag held meetings with his staff and the players throughout the day.

United players started returning for pre-season medicals on Friday and the first batch of players on Monday turned up at around 9.30am to meet their new manager.

The players underwent routine medical tests and gym work before heading out onto the training pitches in the afternoon.

Ten Hag addressed a combined group of first-team squad members and Under-21 players for "several minutes" at the start of the session, flanked by McClaren and Van der Gaag.

The players spent over two hours on the grass, the bulk of it ball work interspersed with running drills. Carrington sources were encouraged that some players who had arrived before 9am stayed until gone 4pm.
