Erik ten Hag makes promise to Manchester United fans over Man City treble target

Erik ten Hag has told Manchester United fans he and his team will give "everything they have" to stop Manchester City from edging closer to a treble on FA Cup final day.

The rivals will meet at Wembley on June 3 and if City have secured the Premier League title and beaten Real Madrid in the Champions League final they will be aiming for the second leg of the treble.

Pep Guardiola's side have taken control of the Premier League title race and if they beat Real they would be favourites to beat either AC Milan or Inter Milan in the Champions League final.

United are the only English side to ever win the treble, having claimed the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League in 1999. The club and its supporters remain proud of that record and would be determined to halt City's attempts to match them in their tracks, something that isn't lost on Ten Hag.

"I understand, of course, the feelings from the Man United fans about it. We will do everything to give them the second trophy, everything what I have, everything what the team has, the staff has, we will give everything to get that done," said Ten Hag.

"When I say everything, that is everything, more than 100% you can’t do. So the fans can rely on that - that we will give it and do it against every opponent. But of course we want to give that against City, we want to give the fans that, for sure."

United know they can beat City, having won 2-1 at Old Trafford back in January, although they were beaten 6-3 at the Etihad earlier in Ten Hag's reign.

Guardiola's side have hit top form recently, however, and will pose a significant test in what will be United's third visit to Wembley this season and Ten Hag knows they will have to play the "perfect game".

"We can do it, because we prove it. It’s not an easy job though, it’s a great team, but we also have a great team and great players and we can beat them," said Ten Hag.

"We are proof, proof that we could beat them but then we have to play the perfect game. I think that was the perfect game we played this season but we have to go again. We know that but first of all we have to focus on different occasions, different games to be in the top four to get into the Champions League next season."
