Erik ten Hag said he could have taken all 11 Manchester United players off at half-time of the 4-0 hammering at Brentford, as he lamented his side's decision-making.
United were well beaten in west London, going four goals down inside the first 35 minutes as the hosts ran riot.
A subdued Ten hag told the press afterwards: "We've all seen the game. I think Brentford were more hungry, and we conceded goals from individual mistakes. You can have a good plan, but then you have to put the plan in the bin.
"The first two goals is about dealing with the ball, and decisions."
Goalkeeper David de Gea was clearly at fault for the first two Brentford strikes, first fumbling a long range Josh Da Silva strike into his net when it had seemed easier to save it.
The spotlight was again on De Gea when his ball out to Christian Eriksen was seized upon by Mattias Jensen who scored the second, before incredibly weak defending from a corner - with eyes again cast towards De Gea, but more specifically defender Lisandro Martinez - allowed Ben Mee to make it 3-0.
Bryan Mbuemo added the fourth as United were cut open, and Ten Hag said his players had nowhere to hide, especially De Gea.
"He (Eriksen) didn't have to receive the ball there, we didn't give him options. We said invite them, play long," said Ten Hag on the second goal.
"I'm convinced that (De Gea) can do it (play out from the back). He's shown it in training, he can do it."
On the players as a group, he added: "We have to question their desire, and we will do it in the coming hours. But we are together, and we are clearly in a really difficult situation, but we stick together and we have to find resources and solutions.
"They follow my instructions, but they make bad decisions. This is football, it is a game of mistakes and you get punished."
When questioned on his decision to bring off Lisandro Martinez at half-time, which he did alongside Luke Shaw and Fred, Ten Hag said: "I subbed three, but I could have changed them all. We want to bring some fresh energy into the game."
Brentford boss Thomas Frank was full of praise for his side, claiming that the win was one of his best days at the club, even though he admitted he felt the scoreline flattered them a little.
"I don't think it was a 4-0 win, but it was clearly deserved," said Frank.
"I don't like to talk about other clubs than my own, so please respect that, and I hope you guys give us the credit we deserve."
