Erik ten Hag lifts lid on Sir Alex Ferguson chat as Ajax boss becomes Manchester United favourite

Erik ten Hag has already been given a special insight into life at Manchester United by Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Ajax boss has emerged over the past few days as United’s preferred candidate to become the club’s next permanent manager. Although no plans have been finalised, United still intend on making an appointment before the end of the current season.

Ten Hag has impressed United with his ability to assemble two successful teams during his time in charge of Ajax. His potential for longevity also appeals to the club, with the 52-year-old having been in charge in Amsterdam since December 2017.

The Dutchman is contracted with Ajax until next year, but his compensation fee isn’t thought to be an issue. Ten Hag has so far batted back any questions over his future, although he has made suggestions that he could be open to a move in the summer.

And a move to United looks to be open to him should he wish to take up the job at Old Trafford. Should he decide to, he will already have a good idea of what to expect, having gained some insight from the club’s greatest ever manager.

Speaking during an interview for Ajax’s YouTube channel in 2020, Ten Hag revealed how he met Ferguson on a previous visit to Carrington. While meeting the legendary manager, he got the chance to speak to him and see how he operated at United.

“Steve and I visited Sir Alex Ferguson when we played Manchester City, the morning before the match we had coffee with him - it was a memorable conversation about football,” Ten Hag said.

“When we visited, Sir Alex Ferguson was sitting in his office, he was the manager and he had an overview of the pitches at Carrington and he could follow the training sessions from his office, it was an experience.”

While Ten Hag is United’s preferred choice, the club are yet to make a final decision. Mauricio Pochettino remains one of the frontrunners, with the Paris Saint-Germain boss expected to be sacked following their exit from the Champions League.

United have also not ruled out making an approach for Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel amid the ongoing uncertainty at Stamford Bridge. Ten Hag, though, looks to be the favourite as United hope to have their man in place ahead of what will be a pivotal summer.
