Erik ten Hag lifts lid on dinner meeting with Sir Alex Ferguson before Barcelona clash

Erik ten Hag says Manchester United must produce their best performance under him tomorrow if they are to overcome Barcelona.

United and Barca played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in the Nou Camp in the first leg of their Europa League play-off tie, to determine which side advances to the last 16. Ten Hag has called on his players to produce their best against Xavi's La Liga leaders if they are to continue their European journey and maintain their fight for glory on four fronts.

Asked if United had received enough credit this season, for their progress under him, Ten Hag said: “It's not about credit, it's about trophies. We have the opportunity, but the first focus point is the next game and in the Europa League we can't win a trophy this week.

“We have to go from game and game, keep the same mindset and every day give a better version of ourselves. When you face a big team like Barcelona you have to play your best.

“We have to give the best performance of the season, we believe in it, we're looking forward to it, so we have to give a lot of energy. We all want to play big games, big matches. When we were young we dreamed of it.

“We are in the position, it's February, big games are coming up and we enjoy it, we're really excited, we have to give our best.

“For me, the next game is always the biggest game. I'm not the type who looks back, I look forward.

“I'm excited about tomorrow. Two great teams facing each other at Old Trafford, a massive atmosphere, a great ambience, it's the best you can get.”

Ten Hag was pictured having dinner with Sir Alex Ferguson last night and said he welcomed the chance to tap into the wisdom and experience of the legendary former United boss. Asked how valuable it was being able to lean on Ferguson for advice, Ten Hag said: “It's massive.

“I always enjoy speaking with people who have a lot of knowledge, a lot of experience and he wants to share it, he wants to help and support.

Manchester United is his club and he feels so committed. We are doing well. It was a great night and I look forward to the next night with him.”

United are likely to be without Antony Martial, who is making his way back from injury, but Antony and Harry Maguire are both back and available for selection.

“We still have the training to go, but I expect Harry and Antony available,” said Ten Hag. “Anthony Martial is not available. He's back, he's back on the pitch, so we wait. We do diff but we will see tomorrow on the pitch, a different idea but we can't tell that now.

Barcelona are without Gavi, Pedri and Ousmane Dembele and Ten Hag said: “I don't know what Xavi's thinking but obviously Gavi and Pedri are great players. Although they are very young, they have already had a positive effect on Barcelona.

“Their squad has so much depth they have players who can replace them and if we want to win we have to be at our very best.”
