Erik ten Hag issues reminder to Alejandro Garnacho after Manchester United contract extension

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has reminded Alejandro Garnacho that expectations of him have only heightened after the youngster signed a long-term contract extension.

Garnacho, 18, is now committed to United for five more years after putting pen to paper on a deal until 2028. A successful conclusion to negotiations coincided with a return to first-team training on Friday after almost two months out with an ankle injury.

The Argentina international has missed United's last ten matches across all competitions and his return will boost the Reds in the run-in, as they aim to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League ahead of the FA Cup final against City in June.

''I am very pleased with the development," Ten Hag told club media. "At the start of the season you always hope that you can bring one or two players from the academy up into the first team, and he made it.

"Today is a day for celebration for him but it has to be an inspiration and a motivation especially, because it's a new start as well. Expectations will be higher and we expect him to contribute even more to Man United and we want to win trophies and to be successful, to win every game. I need a player who has the standard of good is not good enough. We have to do better.''
