Erik ten Hag in disagreement with Man Utd board over Harry Kane transfer as budget set

Manchester United were divided about whether they want to sign Harry Kane this summer, which has led to them abandoning a move for the forward.

Kane, 29, has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag tries to add a new striker to his squad. Signing a forward is United's priority in the summer transfer window and Kane took a place at the top of their shopping list.

United have one senior recognised striker at the club following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in December, with Wout Weghorst also returning to Burnley this month after the expiration of his loan deal. Anthony Martial has struggled with injuries in 2022/23 but is the only central forward at the Red Devils, with Marcus Rashford preferred out wide.

Ten Hag wanted Kane to fill that void up front, but according to The Athletic, some members of the United hierarchy are not sure about signing England's all-time leading scorer. Although Kane will turn 30 next month and is entering the final year of his contract, it will still take a huge fee to land him.

Daniel Levy does not want to sell Kane and is hoping to tie him to a new contract, despite Tottenham failing to qualify for the Champions League next season. In fact, Spurs didn't even qualify for the Europa League or the Europa Conference League and finished eighth in 2022/23.

But Kane was a shining light in a poor season for Tottenham as he struck a remarkable 30 Premier League goals, second to Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race. Real Madrid have also been linked with Kane, and at this point, a move to Los Blancos is looking the likeliest outcome as Levy does not want to sell to a domestic rival.

As for United, a move for Kane would all but blow away their whole transfer budget this summer. Ten Hag has around £120million to spend on new players and Tottenham want over £100m for their talisman. Spurs' asking price is putting United off, especially considering his age and contract situation.

This could see United move elsewhere to look at alternatives. One of them is Atalanta forward Rasmus Hojlund. He has emerged as a potential target, having scored 10 times in 34 matches during his debut campaign in Italy.

However, United are not the only team interested in the 20-year-old, with several Premier League clubs and other sides across Europe ready to sign the highly-rated forward.

Hojlund scored a hat-trick on his first international start for Denmark in March, putting his name in the shop window. Speaking earlier this week, Hojlund admitted he is flattered by the transfer interest from United but didn't give away much on his future as the Red Devils track his signature.

He told Tipsbladet on the interest in him: "It is a huge club, so I must have done something right if it’s rumoured they want me. We have to see what happens.

"As you see and hear, I imagine a lot could happen to quite a few strikers this summer, as many clubs are looking for a no9. Something will definitely happen there, and then we’ll have to wait and see if I am included in it.

"I am very happy to be with Atalanta and we have qualified for Europe. I have found myself in a really good place here, so now we have to wait and see."
