Erik ten Hag hints at Victor Lindelof Manchester United position tweak

Erik ten Hag has suggested that he sees Victor Lindelof as an ideal option to use on the left-side of defence despite signing Lisandro Martinez to play there in the summer.

United identified signing a new centre-back as a transfer priority in the past transfer window, with new manager Ten Hag making clear his preference was to sign a left-footed one. The response was to spend £56.7m on Ajax ace Lisandro Martinez, a player who has hit the ground running at Old Trafford with his defensive ability.

The arrival of Martinez looked to have spelled big problems for Lindelof's future in a United shirt, but he has enjoyed a resurgence in recent weeks, starting alongside the Argentine in wins over Omonia and Everton. The Sweden international is expected to start in the right centre-back role again when United host Omonia tonight, but ahead of the match, Ten Hag suggested Lindelof is actually better suited to the other side of defence.

“Yeah, it’s not easy to carry the shirt of Manchester United and if you wear it 200 times that tells something," the United manager told club media. "Then you can say Victor is a really important player in the squad. He had with me a really good pre-season. I was impressed by his performances as a left centre-half.

"He was really disappointed he fell out [of the team] after the game at Atletico Madrid and then he had to miss the start of the season. But he has done really well now that he’s back. He came back and in the last two games he played from the start and [has] done very well.

"So I’m very happy with that. What it tells us is that we not only need 11 players, we not only need a team of 11, we need a squad. If you want to win something, you need a squad to achieve that.”
