Erik ten Hag hints at Amad's Man Utd role next season with FA Cup gesture

Manchester United winger Amad is set to join up with Erik ten Hag's squad at Wembley as they take on Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

The 20-year-old will not be involved in the game, having already represented Sunderland in this season's competition. However, his form for the Black Cats has prompted calls for him to feature under Ten Hag next season.

Amad, an Ivorian international, has spent the season on loan at the Stadium of Light following Sunderland's promotion to the Championship. A second straight promotion could now be on the cards, with Tony Mowbray's side set to take on Luton Town in the play-off semi-finals before his parent club attempt to win another trophy.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Amad's measurements have been taken for a cup final suit ahead of the game on June 3 - one week after the Championship play-off final. The decision is expected to be a precursor to the former Atalanta starlet linking up with United's squad in earnest for their pre-season tour of the United States.

"Tour 2023 will not only see the return of our senior players to training and playing, but there will also be valuable opportunities for up-and-coming talent from our Academy to experience life within the first team environment - and for our US fans to see some potential stars of the future," Man Utd football director John Murtough said when the tour was announced. "We know that Man Utd and the Premier League in general are growing in popularity across the US, so we are looking forward to building on this connection this summer."

Manchester United are set to play in multiple US cities during their summer tour. They will take on Arsenal in New York, before heading west for games against Wrexham in San Diego and Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas.

Amad has impressed during a loan spell with Sunderland (PA)

Amad has scored 13 times during his Sunderland loan spell, including a final day effort at Preston. Victory at Deepdale, combined with results elsewhere, ensured Mowbray's side crept into the final play-off spot.

“I have a good feeling for Amad that if he’s not back at United he will go for big, big money to a top Spanish team," Mowbray said in April. “He loves football and wants to play so what do you do if you are at Manchester United?

“The reality is he won’t be coming here, in my mind, unless they think he is going to be one hell of a player and needs to play, or he enjoys Sunderland and should keep going to play for them.

"That would be the ideal scenario for us. Pretty unlikely I would suggest, but you never know because if they see him as genuinely someone who can play in their first team down the line they could keep him on board."
