Erik ten Hag given transfer solution and told Man Utd offer would "always" be accepted

Sergio Romero is interested in returning to Manchester United, just a year after his departure, the Manchester Evening News report.

The Argentine goalkeeper spent six years at Old Trafford and proved a reliable understudy to clear-cut No.1 David de Gea. In his time at the club, Romero made 61 appearances with all but seven of those coming in European and cup competitions.

But he rarely let the Red Devils down and enabled De Gea to take a breather and prioritise the bigger matches and tournaments. However, despite his good work, he was frozen out by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and was made to train alone following the return of Dean Henderson from his loan spell with Sheffield United.

Romero was desperate to seal a United exit in the summer of 2020, only to see a move to Everton get blocked in the final hours of deadline day. That caused his wife, Elian Guercio, to blast the club’s treatment of her husband, accusing them of lacking honesty and professionalism.

"I am sad because Sergio deserved the opportunity to go to another club, he has shown what he can do and he worked every day,” she said after the window closed. "It is a very sad day because he desired the chance to go to another club. He has worked hard every day for this, because he gives his all for United and I think that his chances of playing for United have gone down.

"This doesn’t sound right to me. It doesn’t appear honest or professional or serious that they have to let him go. I am very sad because of this.”

Despite an exit route being blocked, he didn’t make a single appearance in his final season, before his contract expired and he joined Italian outfit Venezia. He turned out 16 times in Serie A, but his season ended in relegation and he is now once again a free agent.

And ironically Henderson’s imminent exit could open the door for Romero to return to Carrington, with a vacancy for a back-up keeper becoming open again. Tom Heaton is currently the only senior option behind De Gea, meaning Erik ten Hag could look to bring in a body to add extra competition.

The MEN claim that while United have yet to approach Romero, the player has made it abundantly clear he would be open in returning to the Premier League giants. A source told the publication that he still has a lot from the club “would always come back” if an offer was presented to him.

United have thus far failed to bring in a single summer signing, with Ten Hag kicking off his first pre-season at the start of the week. A new midfield player remains the priority and a deal for Frenkie de Jong continues to edge closer after reaching a ‘broad agreement’ with Barcelona.

Tyrell Malacia could also be added to the squad after a £15million agreement was reached with Feyenoord, whilst Christian Eriksen continues to mull over his options before deciding his next destination.

It is anticipated that once De Jong’s transfer gets over the line, United’s transfer committee - which includes Ten Hag and football director John Murtough - will pivot to signing a versatile attacking player. Ajax forward Antony is believed to be their top target, however there is some work to do in order to bridge the sizable gap between valuations from the prospective buyer and seller.
