Erik ten Hag eyes yet another transfer reunion in bitter blow to Man Utd outcast

Manchester United are reportedly in the hunt for Barcelona defender Sergino Dest as Erik ten Hag eyes another Old Trafford reunion.

The Red Devils have been one of Europe’s biggest spenders this summer since the arrival of the Dutchman. Their huge outlay was increased considerably on Tuesday with the confirmation that a deal has been agreed for Ajax winger Antony.

The Brazilian has become the second player to swap the Eredivisie giants for Old Trafford having followed Lisandro Martinez through the door. Ten Hag is reportedly keen on securing yet another reunion with one of his former players with just over 48 hours of the current transfer window remaining.

As per Sky Sports, the Red Devils are considering a move for Barcelona defender Sergino Dest. The American defender played under Ten Hag during the pair’s respective stints in Amsterdam before sealing a move to the Camp Nou.

He has not quite managed to find consistency whilst in Catalonia. In his two years with Barcelona, he has made 72 appearances for the club but does not appear to be in the club’s plans this season.

The right-back has not made a single appearance yet under Xavi and has regularly been linked with a move away from Barcelona this summer - Man Utd’s Premier League rivals Chelsea emerging as chief admirers. A switch has not yet come to fruition with Dest having three years left to run on his contract in Spain.

That could well change over the closing days of the transfer window, however, with it being suggested that the Red Devils are in the race for his services. Any move would see United take a tricky decision over the future of Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The right-back has fallen down the pecking order at Old Trafford over recent seasons and was expected to leave the club - former employers Crystal Palace noted to be interested in re-signing him. However, Erik ten Hag made the decision to keep him with reports suggesting that the Red Devils had no intention to either loan or sell him between now and Thursday’s deadline.

Whether that remains the case should Dest arrive at the club remains to be seen but he is likely to be starved of any real first-team action. Portuguese defender Diogo Dalot is currently Ten Hag’s first choice for the position, with summer arrival Tyrell Malacia impressing on the opposite flank.

Wan-Bissaka of course arrived at Man Utd in the summer of 2019 in a £50m switch from Selhurst Park. The 24-year-old has gone on to make 127 appearances for the Red Devils since but has only played four minutes this season - that cameo coming late on in the victory over Liverpool.

The former England U21 international has just two years remaining on his contract at Old Trafford.
