Erik ten Hag explains why Casemiro is on Manchester United bench vs Southampton

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has explained his decision to start Casemiro on the bench vs Southampton.

United return to action this Saturday lunchtime following a very positive result over Liverpool on Monday night. Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were both on the scoresheet as the Reds registered their first victory of the campaign.

Before the match, Casemiro was introduced to the home fans at Old Trafford where he received a very warm response. Due to Premier League registering rules, the 30-year-old had to watch from the stands as United beat their rivals.

Casemiro is eligible to be a part of the squad today for United and there had been some talk that he would come straight into the starting XI. However, Ten Hag has opted to keep the same side that beat Jurgen Klopp's team with his new signing coming onto the bench in replace of the injured Anthony Martial.

Speaking to BT Sport, Ten Hag explained the reason for his decision. He said: "I think we have a squad that’s competitive so it’s always a difficult decision but we had a really good performance on Monday so you stick with it.

"It’s also to give Casemiro the time, he’s not played 90 minutes, he has to adapt to England, adapt to Man United and integrate into the team."
