Erik ten Hag delivers update on Wout Weghorst and hints at Facundo Pellistri role after Man United win

Erik ten Hag opened the door to Facundo Pellistri remaining at Manchester United after a fine assist for Marcus Rashford in the 3-0 win over Charlton.

The Red Devils are through to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup but struggled against League One opposition until the introduction of the England international.

The 25-year-old now has seven goals in his last six games after being played in by an assist from Pellistri on what was the Uruguay international’s long-awaited United debut.

Speaking after the match at Old Trafford, Ten Hag refused to be drawn on the potential loan signing of Wout Weghorst from Burnley but opened up on his plans for Pellistri.

“No, unfortunately, I can’t,” Ten Hag said about the signing of Weghorst.

“I see a future in [Pellistri],” he added. “He is doing really well, he is progressing.

“Also against Everton [in last month’s friendly], I was really happy with his performance. He is coming on and has an effect, that is the next step.”

The Addicks played much of the second half in Man United’s half forcing Ten Hag to bring on Rashford, Casemiro and Christian Eriksen in the 60th minute.

Rashford again proved his worth ahead of a crucial derby match at home to Manchester City on Saturday.

Ten Hag said: “I have told you many times when he puts himself in the position, in the one-on-ones in the box, he will score and that is what he is doing at the moment.

“When he keeps the focus and keeps putting the same effort in he will keep on scoring.”
