Erik ten Hag delivers Bruno Fernandes injury update ahead of Tottenham vs Man United

Erik ten Hag has revealed that Bruno Fernandes is a doubt for Manchester United's Premier League clash against Tottenham on Thursday. The versatile midfielder was subbed off in extra time of United's FA Cup semi-final penalty shoot out victory against Brighton with ice then seen strapped to his ankle following his withdrawal.

United and Spurs endured very different weekends with the Lilywhites battered 6-1 by Newcastle which saw interim manager Cristian Stellini relieved of his duties. For the second time in two years, Ryan Mason will take charge until the end of the season after he also came in for Jose Mourinho when he was sacked in 2019.

One similarity between the two teams though, is that injury blows were suffered at the weekend with Spurs captain Hugo Lloris subbed off at half time. In his press conference on Wednesday, Mason admitted he was unsure if the Frenchman would be fit enough to play, while Clement Lenglet and Ben Davies, who were both on the bench against Newcastle, will be reviewed in training.

United have also suffered major injury blows in defence with Lisandro Martinez out for the season and Raphael Varane expected to miss at least another month of action. While ten Hag's side have mostly coped without their first-choice centre-back pairing, despite their embarrassing Europa League exit, missing Fernandes could be detrimental to the Red Devils.

The Portugal international's wife posted a photo of Fernandes resting his foot with a boot and crutches laid beside him. Despite that seeming to indicate he will be absent, ten Hag did not rule him out of the game in his press conference ahead of the clash.

"We have to see how Bruno Fernandes is, we don't know yet. He is a question mark," he said. The availability of Fernandes therefore remains rather unknown, but if he is absent it would be a massive blow to United who have struggled for midfield balance without him in the team.
