Erik ten Hag contradicts himself with 'demand' to Man Utd chiefs despite 7-man wishlist

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has appeared to contradict himself with his decision on goalkeeper David de Gea.

De Gea, 32, is enjoying a decent season at Old Trafford but his £375,000-a-week contract is due to expire at the end of the current campaign.

The Spaniard is keen to extend his 12-year stint and Ten Hag wants him to stay, although De Gea will have to take a significant pay cut if he is to put pen-to-paper. The Daily Star reports United want De Gea to cut his wages by £100,000-a-week with Ten Hag informing the board at Old Trafford that he wants his No.1 to stick around.

That demand comes despite United being linked with a host of goalkeepers in recent months amid reports Ten Hag was eyeing a replacement.

One of the standout names to be reportedly on their radar is England No.1 Jordan Pickford, who will be in the final year of his contract with Everton next season.

Pickford was key to Everton surviving last season but may seek a fresh challenge next term and will be hoping for a good World Cup in Qatar. Another goalkeeper heading for Qatar is Robert Sanchez, with Mirror Sport reporting United - along with Chelsea - are monitoring the Brighton stopper.

The Spaniard, 24, is seen as a potential long-term replacement for De Gea, who he got the nod over in Luis Enrique's squad.

Leeds No.1 Ilan Meslier has also been linked with a move to Old Trafford at the end of the season as he continues to impress at Elland Road under Jesse Marsch.

Meslier joined Leeds for around £5m at the start of last season after an impressive loan and has attracted interest from a host of top European clubs, including Bayern Munich.

United have also had their scouts looking further afield as they reportedly plan for life without De Gea, with Diogo Costa emerging as an alternative.

Costa has been on their radar for some time but it appeared they would miss out after he signed a new deal with Porto earlier this month with a £65million release clause. That may not deter the Red Devils though, who would reportedly be willing to pay the hefty fee to land the 23-year-old.

United have had success signing goalkeepers towards the twilight of their careers in the past, particularly Edwin van der Sar, who was 35 when he arrived from Fulham in 2005.

And they could yet revive their interest in Swiss No.1 Yann Sommer, who plays his club football with Borussia Monchengladbach. Sommer, 33, was said to be flattered by links to Old Trafford before they brought in Martin Dubravka from Newcastle.

Ten Hag is thought to be keeping his options open and was also keen on Watford's Daniel Bachmann, who held talks over a move last summer.

Bachmann decided he didn't want to be a bit-part player and stayed with the Championship club but performances at Vicarage Road have shown he could become No.1 at Old Trafford.
