Erik ten Hag refused to be drawn on Cody Gakpo but did confirm Manchester United were looking to sign a new striker in the January transfer window.

The PSV Eindhoven forward had been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford but will instead join rivals Liverpool, who reportedly stole a march on United.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit has left ten Hag light, despite the increasingly prolific form of Marcus Rashford.

The England international scored his fifth Premier League goal of the season against Nottingham Forest, while Anthony Martial bagged his third.

Still, United have scored fewer goals (23) this season than all of their rivals for the Champions League aside from Chelsea, who are expected to move for a new striker themselves.

Joao Felix has been tipped a target for both United and Chelsea and Standard Sport understands the Atletico Madrid forward has been offered to Premier League clubs, though at a cost of around £86m.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Video Sport after the game, ten Hag said: “I don’t talk about individual cases. We are looking for offensive players, looking for a striker, that would be good because we have so many games coming.

“We want to keep playing in all the competitions we are in, we want to keep going to the end of the season so you need numbers to keep competing.”
