Erik ten Hag breaks silence on Andre Onana deal and issues Manchester United transfer update

Erik ten Hag admits that it is important to have a top goalkeeper at the club amid his interest in signing Andre Onana.

Manchester United are optimistic about the prospect of signing Inter Milan goalkeeper Onana to replace David de Gea after he left the club for good last week.

The 27-year-old is United's primary goalkeeping target, with MEN Sport recently revealing John Murtough had discussed the potential parameters of a deal for the Inter man.

Tom Heaton started for United in their pre-season opener against Leeds on Wednesday, with academy youngster Matej Kovar brought on for the second half of the game.

After the match, Ten Hag was asked whether it was important to finalise a deal for Onana as soon as possible and he was also quizzed on his wider transfer plans for the summer.

"Of course, goalkeeper is a key position, but I am happy with the players we have now," he told reporters in Oslo. Ten Hag also insisted that Dean Henderson was an option to play in goal next season if a new goalkeeper can't be signed.

Henderson did not make the trip to Norway and he wants to leave the club amid Nottingham Forest's interest in signing him permanently.

Asked how confident he was of having new signings in place before their flight to the US next week, Ten Hag added: "Confident? You never know in transfers, but we’re working on it. But in the meantime, we have to work on our way of playing to put progression in place.

"This is the moment in the season when you have time to train with your team, so I’m looking forward to Saturday and all the internationals coming in, and then you can really add sense to the squad, the team, and the way of playing."
