Manchester United have a number of problems to address in the summer transfer window but who they sign will most likely depend on which permanent manager they decide to appoint.
United's top managerial targets are Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag, though recent reports in the English media seem to lean towards the Dutchman being appointed the next man in the Old Trafford dugout, with Jonathan Schrager the latest to claim that the club has approached him.
So who would he sign?
A defensive midfielder and a striker seem to be at the top of the priority list for United and MEN Sport understands that the club are planning to make up to four signings in the summer.
Given how tumultuous this season has been so far and the demands the new manager will have, United could increase this number if the budget allows and some reports have stated that the club could look for another centre back to challenge Harry Maguire.
The Daily Mail has stated that despite Ralf Rangnick's public support of Maguire, he has his doubts behind the scenes and may suggest that a new centre back is signed as early as this summer.
If Ten Hag is appointed he may return to Ajax, who have a reputation for selling their top talent, to solve some problems. Jurrien Timber has impressed this season but is maybe too young to make the move to Old Trafford. His centre-back partner in Amsterdam could be the answer.
Lisandro Martinez has been a key performer for Ajax this season and Ten Hag has highlighted his importance to the team. He started his career at the club as a defensive midfielder, but the Dutch manager saw that he could thrive in the backline.
Martinez, despite never having played there before, took his opportunity with both hands and is now a permanent fixture. In an interview with Ajax's official website, he said: "I've grown a lot here. I've become a much stronger and smarter player here, and more calm on the ball."
The Argentinian is only 5'9, but his technical ability and reading of the game mean that his height rarely becomes an issue. United saw how this could be the case when Daley Blind used to play as a centre-back.
Martinez - valued at £28.8 by Transfermarkt - would offer a different option to the current crop at Old Trafford and maybe by signing him, United would finally rectify the mistake they made when they let Blind return to Ajax.
