Erik ten Hag Ajax successor comes forward as Manchester United hold talks

Ajax legend Patrick Kluivert has said he would be “ready” to become the club’s next boss, should Erik ten Hag be appointed Manchester United’s permanent manager.

The Reds hierarchy have held talks with the 52-year-old this week, although United are keen to underline that these discussions do not indicate anything concrete. Following their interview with the Dutchman, they have scheduled further talks regarding the club's next boss, after initially circling Ten Hag as their preferred choice .

Now, Kluivert has revealed he would be willing to take on the Ajax mantle should ten Hag swap Amsterdam for Manchester. Speaking to Dutch ESPN (via FC Update ), he said: “Yes, absolutely. If there is a good project somewhere, I would like to be its head coach.

“We are currently looking at something fun to do. If God wants me to coach Ajax, then I can.

"I am ready for it myself. I have done other things after my career, now it is time for a bigger club.”

Kluivert famously won the double with Ajax in the 1994/95 season, lifting the Champions League and Eredivisie title before the club's UEFA Super Cup triumph a few months after. Later in his career, he went on to win La Liga with Barcelona in 1999.

The former Newcastle striker scored 52 goals in 100 senior appearances across three years for Ajax after coming through the academy system in 1994, and is regarded as one of the club’s all-time greats. He was an academy coach for the Dutch giants in 2016 before going on to be the director of youth football at Barcelona between 2019 and 2021.

Kluivert was also the director of football at PSG from 2016 to 2017 and has experience as an assistant coach with the Netherlands and Cameroon. However, the 45-year-old has never managed a senior club side since hanging up his playing boots in 2008, although did take charge of the Curacao national team - a country made up of two Kingdom of Netherlands islands in south America - between 2015 and 2016.
