Eric Dier declares England intention and excitement at Tottenham's 'great' transfer window

Tottenham's pre-season tour of South Korea is brought to you in association with Nord VPN, sponsors of football.london's coverage.

Eric Dier has declared his intention to fight for his place in England's World Cup squad by showing what he can do for Tottenham Hotspur following what he sees as a "great" summer at the club.

The 28-year-old has not been able to add to his international 45 caps for almost two years, having been called up in 2021 for three matches but not used by Gareth Southgate. Dier has become a lynchpin of Antonio Conte's back three but still cannot find a place in Southgate's plans.

While in South Korea on Tottenham's pre-season tour ahead of the coming Premier League season, Dier admitted that he's desperate to earn his place back in the England squad before the winter World Cup in Qatar.

"That’s a clear objective of mine. I would never shy away from that. I want to be there. It's just up to me playing the best I can. Take everything from last season and kick on," he said. "That’s all I can focus on, give myself every opportunity and have no regrets in the way I do everything leading up to the next England squad and the World Cup and see what happens. There’s nothing quite like a World Cup. It was an incredible time and I’d love to be a part of another one."

Dier was one of England's heroes at the World Cup in Russia in 2018, scoring the penalty shoot-out winner against Colombia that ended the country's spot kick woes. The defender simply calls it a "great memory" and the key to his return will be what he does with Tottenham. Dier is enjoying his role in the centre of Conte's back three, a system England also use.

"I’m learning a system under him here and I think it’s his system, he’s the best at it,” said Dier. “There are so many things I can improve on and get better under him. There’s a lot more to come from that system and the manager."

Dier has been impressed by a summer that has brought five new signings to Tottenham in Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster as well as Clement Lenglet on loan just before the tour.

"I’m so happy on an individual, and I think I can speak on a collective level as well, everyone is really happy with how the summer has gone. The manager here and looking to continue to build," he said. "We all have a reason to be excited for what’s to come. The club have had a great summer, they’ve made a lot of signings and really exciting signings, in my opinion."

Dier was speaking at a Tottenham Hotspur Global football development session with young adults from ChildFund Korea, one of the most influential charities in South Korea which aims to support children from low-income families to help develop their talents.
