EPA Awards .3 Billion Grants To Reduce Climate Pollution

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro speaks during a news conference overlooking the Susquehanna River from a balcony at the offices of the Susquehanna River Basin Commission, Tuesday, July 9, 2024, in Harr

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced the allocation of $4.3 billion in grants to support projects aimed at reducing climate pollution across 30 states. These grants will fund 25 projects targeting greenhouse gas emissions from various sectors including transportation, electric power, buildings, industry, agriculture, and waste management.

The funding for these grants is made possible by the 2022 climate law, known as the Inflation Reduction Act, which was approved by congressional Democrats. This legislation includes significant spending and tax credits to accelerate the adoption of clean energy sources such as wind and solar power, facilitating the transition away from fossil fuels that contribute to climate change.

One notable grant of $396 million is being awarded to Pennsylvania to reduce industrial greenhouse gas emissions from materials like cement and asphalt. EPA Administrator will be joining Pennsylvania Governor to announce the grant recipients in the state and across the nation.

Another significant grant of nearly $500 million will be directed towards transportation and freight decarbonization at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. This funding will support initiatives such as electric charging infrastructure, zero-emission freight vehicles, and the conversion of cargo handling equipment to reduce emissions.

The EPA emphasizes the importance of these grants in implementing community-driven solutions that reduce air pollution, promote environmental justice, and accelerate the transition to clean energy. The agency's commitment to addressing climate change is underscored by the Biden administration's historic investment in climate action.

Various states are set to receive grants for specific projects, such as Nebraska's $307 million grant to enhance climate-smart agriculture and energy efficiency. Additionally, grants will support the deployment of electric vehicle infrastructure, cold-climate heat pumps, and renewable energy projects in different regions.

These grants represent a significant step towards achieving environmental goals and fostering sustainable practices across the country. The EPA's efforts, in collaboration with state and local governments, aim to drive meaningful progress in combating climate change and promoting a cleaner, more sustainable future.
