Eoin Morgan injury: England sweating on fitness ahead of Netherlands series after groin strain

England’s white-ball selection team will announce the squad to face Netherlands next month and are sweating on the fitness of captain Eoin Morgan after he injured his groin playing for Middlesex on Sunday.

Morgan revealed in an interview with Standard Sport last week that he would not be playing Blast matches on successive days in a bid, aged 35, to manage his body ahead of October’s T20 World Cup.

So he played the tournament opener on Thursday, sat out Friday’s fixture against Hampshire, then faced Glamorgan at Radlett on Sunday.

Morgan left the field as a precaution having tweaked his groin as Glamorgan scored 168 in their 20 overs, then did not bat as Middlesex chased it six wickets down, to secure their third win in a row. The club is unbeaten across formats this season.

The groin issue follows a quad injury on the tour of the Caribbean in January. He will head for a scan this week and there is a confidence he will be fit. Middlesex do not play again until Friday, and Morgan was in line to play as many as four more games in the tournament.

An ODI squad for the three-match series next month will be selected in the next day or so by a panel led by Rob Key, the Managing Director, with support from new Head Coach Matthew Mott (who arrives in the country this week) and Morgan.
