It hasn’t been the season Graham Potter would have wanted since taking the reins at Chelsea. With just one win in eight and sitting 10th in the Premier League, Chelsea have lost their grip on Champions League qualification.
It is no surprise that as a result Graham Potter and Todd Boehly have wasted no time spending in the January transfer window and seemingly looking to hijack the deals of their Premier League rivals. After a somewhat uninspiring summer window, Potter has looked to youth so far this month with the signings of Benoit Badiashile, Andrey Santos and David Datro Fofana.
With their latest deal and fourth signing of the window, Chelsea were able to beat off the advances of Manchester United and Arsenal to secure the loan deal of Joao Felix. As Chelsea look to end the season in better shape than how they’ve started and continue to progress in the Champions League, having made it through to the last 16 to face Borussia Dortmund in February, how many more names could the Blues add to their squad?
As part of our new Rank Your Targets survey, we want to hear your thoughts on where Chelsea are lacking and who they should be looking to bring in - and where Felix ranks among the alternatives.
Could and perhaps, should Chelsea hijack yet another move destined for their rivals? Mykhaylo Mudryk continues to be heavily linked with Arsenal but despite agreeing personal terms, the deal is yet to be concluded and has proven to involve twists. The Ukrainian winger has impressed in the Champions League and domestically for Shakhtar Donetsk, accumulating 10 goals and eight assists in 24 appearances, and could be what the Blues are looking for in the final third.
Having featured heavily for Argentina in the World Cup, it’s no surprise that Enzo Fernandez has been linked with a big-money move to England. Still, it may be hard for Chelsea to lure the 21-year-old away given Benfica only acquired his services last summer. Brighton’s Moises Caicedo is another name who impressed during Ecuador’s run in the World Cup and has been linked with a move to Liverpool, while a reunion with his former head coach Potter seems logical.
AC Milan winger Rafael Leao sparked speculation after engaging with Blues right-back Reece James on Twitter last month and having been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge in the summer, those rumours were bound to reappear, though his current club are hoping to be able to pin him down for a while longer. Borussia Dortmund will be hoping to warn off any approaches for their 18-year-old wonderkid Youssoufa Moukoko this winter but with his future at the Bundesliga side still unclear as he enters the final six months of his deal, Chelsea are eager to add another young talent to their radar. With six goals and six assists in all divisions, the Blues will have to fight off a reported move from Newcastle United.
