Environmental groups are showing signs of discord with the Democratic Party following disruptions by protesters at a recent leadership meeting. This development comes as the party seeks to regroup after its defeat in the 2024 presidential election.
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) organized a candidate forum in Washington, D.C., to select the leader for the upcoming election cycle. The event, aimed at introducing potential new faces within the party, was marred by interruptions from protesters, including members of the Sunrise Movement, a youth-led climate action organization.
The protesters, demanding a clear election strategy post-2024 loss, called for the removal of fossil fuel money from Democratic politics. They also urged the DNC chair candidates to reinstate the party's ban on corporate PAC and lobbyist donations.

One protester was heard shouting, 'What will you do to get fossil fuel money out of Democratic politics? We are facing a climate emergency!' The disruptions led to the removal of about a dozen protesters from the event, which was the final meeting before the upcoming DNC election.
Candidates and moderates expressed frustration with the interruptions, with one candidate remarking that the protesters had 'hijacked the whole evening' and turned it into 'scream night.'
Despite the disruptions, some party members, like former Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, showed understanding towards the protesters' passion for environmental issues. O'Malley emphasized the importance of young activists caring about the planet for the future.
Eight candidates are vying for the position of DNC chair in the upcoming election, including notable figures like O'Malley, Wisconsin chair Ben Wikler, Minnesota chair Ken Martin, and former Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson.
The DNC chair election is scheduled to take place on Saturday, marking a crucial moment for the party as it navigates internal challenges and seeks to realign its priorities moving forward.
