Seaside resort Skegness has added a touch of Sin City glamour – a neon sign reading “Welcome to fabulous Skeg Vegas, not in Nevada”.
The town has become an “Insta hotspot” with visitors flocking to the Lincolnshire coast to pose for photos next to the replica of the famous Las Vegas attraction.
The 8m-tall, 6m-wide Skegness version took over a year to design and make before it was erected last month.
Like the 1959 original in America, it’s situated out of town – outside Skegness stock car racing stadium.
Bosses at Skegness Raceway said: “With the current tough times, we decided to put a smile on everyone’s face and put something back into the community, oh and also light up the sky. The sign is an exact copy of the Las Vegas sign.”
It was made by RD Signs, of Sheffield and reportedly cost £36,000. Boss Nigel Spooner told The Mirror: “It’s causing quite a stir.
“We knew from the outset it would become a landmark.”
It is proving a hit with locals and tourists. Gogglebox star Izzi Warner, who posed for a snap next to it, said that unlike the Vegas version she didn’t have to queue up for a photo.
Previous attempts to promote the town include artist John Hassall’s famous 1908 Jolly Fisherman poster, that read: “Skegness is so bracing!”
