English fan's house attacked in Dublin ahead of World Cup

An England fan living in Lucan, County Dublin has told of how he believes his window was egged because he hung his country's flag out of his window ahead of the World Cup.

Adrian Kennedy and Jeremy Dixon's Facebook live stream for their Opinions Matter podcast made for interesting listening as a listener from England suggested his Dublin home had been egged after he hung the English flag out of his bedroom window.

With the World Cup approaching and England set to get their tournament underway against Iran next Monday, caller Andrew explained that he had hung the flag out to show his support for his country.

He said: "I'm English but I've been living in Lucan for two years now. With the World Cup starting I thought I'd hang one flag up - it's hanging off the top window in my house and I didn't really think anything of it.

"I know the neighbours aren't going to support England - that's fine - but I didn't think it would cause any issues."

However, there were issues almost immediately as a group passing by the house threw eggs at the window.

He continued: "But last night, someone was running by and they threw eggs at my house.

"This is ridiculous.

"I understand that people listening might not support the England team, that's fine, but we have flags from all over the world and I don't see why you target this flag for abuse more than any other one.

"There's going to be loads of people watching the England matches.

"It's not like I've gone crazy with flags or anything, it's just one flag and if you don't like it you can ignore it, it's not asking for your attention."

The English fan also proclaimed he would not be taking his flag down.

He explained: "Somebody asked me if I'm going to take it down, why am I gonna take it down? It's only for a couple of weeks.

"I've been happy here until that, I've never had any problems or never caused any problems but I just think that's so backwards.

Co-presenter Jeremy Dixon had sympathy for the caller, and labelled those supporting the attack as bigots.

He said: "I'm embarrassed for the lot of you, for all the people commenting saying they'd do worse.

"There's a difference between rivalry and bigotry, and the people who threw eggs at Andrew's house are bigots."

And Dixon also questioned the logic of those who claimed not to support England but continued to be ardent supporters of various Premier League football teams.

He continued: "The morons that do this - he said there were four or five of them - I can guarantee you one or two of them were wearing football jerseys from English teams.

"There's more English football jerseys sold per capita in Ireland than any other country in the world.

"My point is you all wear Liverpool and Man United jerseys with pride. There is no difference.

"If the Premier League decided from next year on to put a little crest of St. George's flag on the sleeve, would you still wear your glorious Liverpool or Man United jersey?

"Of course you would."

"He is from England, he should be allowed to support his country without facing criminal damage to his home.

"Reverse time then come back with your flags."

One caller phoned in from Northern Ireland and had a different view on the attack.

She said: "He should know better - if that was a house in the North it wouldn't last very long.

"It's an English flag, what it represents.

"It's not over, for you guys it never even started. Look at your history, go back and read up.

"At the end of the day it's a team, and it's what the flag represents in Ireland.

"It doesn't belong, simple as."

Social media comments were plentiful on the topic, and as with the varying views of presenters and callers, there were different perspectives from viewers of the live stream.

One said: "He is from England, he should be allowed to support his country without facing criminal damage to his home."

While another took a different view, saying: "Reverse time then come back with your flags."
