English cops commended after rescuing 120 people from 'burning building' during COP26

Seven police officers from West Midlands have been commended after rescuing 120 Scots residents from a fire on the top floor of a high-rise flat whilst on duty at Cop26.

The officers were passing Helenvale Street, Glasgow, at around 1.05pm on Sunday, 31 October, 2021 when they noticed smoke billowing out from the top of the building. Police Scotland say a 45-year-old man was charged with culpable and reckless conduct in relation to the incident.

The West Midland officers raised the alarm and led elderly residents and infants down the stairs to safety before fire crews arrived. It is believed one person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

They were on duty last October as part of mutual aid deployment to the COP26 Climate Summit.

In recognition of their actions, a Chief Constable’s Commendation and a Society for the protection of Life from West Midlands Fire Service have been awarded to Sergeant Neil Powers and PC’s Michael Horton, Benjamin Berrisford, Daniel Smith, Adam Ahmadani, Karam Soomal-Goode and Simon Steptoe.

“The fire was extinguished by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and one person was treated by the ambulance service for smoke inhalation.

"A report was submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.”
