England vs USA World Cup permutations: How England can qualify after Iran win vs Wales

England can qualify for the Round of 16 of the World Cup tonight with victory over the USA.

Gareth Southgate's side got things underway in style on Monday as they eased to a 6-2 win over Iran in Doha. A brace from Bukayo Saka, as well as a goal each for Jude Bellingham, Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish, which meant that the Three Lions cruised to a huge three points in their opening match of Group B.

Iran have since responded to that defeat after they beat Wales 2-0 on Friday. Their victory means that England can qualify tonight, but also put themselves within touching distance of qualifying as group winners.

With that in mind, let's take a look at what will happen if the Three Lions win, lose or draw against the USA.

WIN

Victory means that England will qualify for the next round. Meanwhile, Iran will be in second on three points, whilst the USA and Wales will still be on one point apiece.

A win isn't enough to officially confirm top spot, although it would take a pretty big miracle to remove the Three Lions from first place if they win. That's because it goes down to goal difference and after the huge victory in Doha on Monday, England's is already six goals better than Iran's.

LOSS

Defeat would lead to a frantic final matchday in Qatar. The USA will take the initiative of the group with four points, whilst England and Iran would be level on three. Wales would be bottom on one point.

England's superior goal difference over Iran would help in this situation, though, as they would still be second and in control of whether they qualify or not.

DRAW

A draw wouldn't officially secure qualification, but England would still be in control of Group D. Iran would be in second on three points, the USA would follow on two and Wales would be bottom on 1.

However, because of England's +6 goal difference advantage over Wales, and as Iran and USA are set to play each other in the final game, it would take a big result for the Red Dragons to knock their closest rivals out from the competition.
