The Springboks turned the screw in trademark fashion to secure victory over England in a pulsating Test match at Twickenham that had nearly everything. Six tries - four for South Africa and two for the hosts - gave Siya Kolisi and the men in green a 29-20 win here in south-west London.
In a grudge match full of electric rugby, brutal forward battles and some sparkling backplay, it is England that are left picking up the pieces after three straight defeats with more questions than answers for coach Steve Borthwick and captain Jamie George.
The hosts had welcomed South Africa to Twickenham as underdogs, having lost two on the bounce twice in agonising fashion to first New Zealand and then Australia. England put up a good fight but the Boks added their name to that list and now all the Red Rose players have left this Autumn is a match against Japan to try and provide a shot in the arm to a difficult 2024.
While a narrow loss to New Zealand in the first Autumn Nations Series lifted hopes, the nature of this defeat is perhaps not as damaging as the loss to a transitional Australia side last week but still one that will keep the pressure Borthwick. This was a grudge rematch of the 2023 World Cup semi-final and although England kept pace with Rassie Erasmus’ men they faded again in the final quarter. "Then for a long time, the game was toe-to-toe, but in the last period we failed to take our opportunities. How many times did we fail to take our chances in their 22?
"These are painful days, at times we are putting ourselves in positions to win games and we are not converting them. Whilst these are painful, we will use them in a positive way to help with our development."

There is no disgrace in that, given the Springboks are back-to-back World Champions and the best team on the planet right now.

15:36England’s fortunes against South Africa will not be helped by the dual absence of Tom Curry and Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, who have both withdrawn from the squad due to head injuries suffered in Saturday’s last-gasp 42-37 loss to the resurgent Wallabies.
They have been replaced in the wider squad by Bath flanker Ted Hill and Sale wing Tom Roebuck. Sam Underhill replaces Curry in England’s back row, with Ollie Sleightholme coming in out wide for a first start after his two-try outing off the bench against Australia.
