Reece James' fabulous free-kick set England on course for a second World Cup qualification win in four days as Thomas Tuchel's side made light work of Latvia. Gareth Southgate's successor began his reign with a comfortable 2-0 victory against Albania on Friday and ended his first camp by triumphing in these nations' first ever meeting at senior men's level.
James' special first goal for England was followed by all-time top scorer Harry Kane's 71st for his country and substitute Eberechi Eze opening his international account as Latvia fell to a 3-0 Wembley defeat. Quite whether Tuchel got the extra quality he wanted after beating Albania is debatable, but the world's fourth best side was never going to give a fully accurate measure of progress against the country ranked 140th.
Vladislavs Gutkovskis could have given the unfancied visitors a shock lead but failed to punish a Jordan Pickford and Marc Guehi mix-up, before James repaid Tuchel's faith by marking his first England start since 2022 with an exceptional free-kick. England continued to knock on well-drilled Latvia's door, with Kane tapping home a Declan Rice cross before Eze saw a strike deflect in off Antonijs Cernomordijs as their winning start to Group K continued.

FT: England 3-0 Latvia
21:39 , Matt VerriJob done for England.
Two wins out of two under Thomas Tuchel, even if it hasn’t been quite as thrilling in attack as some would have hoped.

England 3-0 Latvia
21:36 , Matt Verri90 mins: Just the three minutes added on.
For about the seventh time tonight, Konsa chases back after a long ball and throws himself to the ground after getting a shove.
England 3-0 Latvia
21:34 , Matt Verri88 mins: Couple of late yellow cars for Latvia, Sits the latest to be booked.
Rogers still looks really bright, it’s been an impressive display. Drives to the byline and earns the corner.
England 3-0 Latvia
21:30 , Matt Verri85 mins: Free-kick worked wide by England, Eze clips in a great cross.
Guehi free in the middle, doesn’t get enough on the flicked header and it’s comfortably wide.
England 3-0 Latvia
21:29 , Matt Verri84 mins: Latvia still trying to play out at the back.
England win it back, Eze’s strike from the edge of the box spins away for another corner.
Foden swings it in, goalkeeper off his line to claim it confidently.
England 3-0 Latvia
21:27 , Matt Verri81 mins: James at left-back now, with Walker on the right. Rogers on the right wing, with Jones in the middle.
Speaking of Rogers, he cuts onto his left foot and lashes an effort at goal. Tipped over.
England 3-0 Latvia
21:23 , Matt Verri78 mins: Few more England changes.
Walker, Henderson and Jones all on. Lewis-Skelly, Rice and Rashford the three to make way.
England 3-0 Latvia
21:22 , Matt Verri77 mins: And Rogers should add his name to that list!
So much space as he strolls into the box, he tries to curl a finish into the far corner but it’s just wide.
Dom Smith at Wembley
21:21 , Matt VerriA first international goal for Reece James, and now a first for Eberechi Eze.
The Palace man has shown good footwork and a directness since coming on.
Finally, a respectable scoreline for England, who lead 3-0.
GOAL! England 3-0 Latvia | Eberechi Eze 75'
21:20 , Matt VerriGreat goal from Eze!
Picks it up out wide, drives into the box and skips past his man on the inside.
Onto his right foot, shot takes a slight deflection and flies in.
England 2-0 Latvia
21:17 , Matt Verri72 mins: Latvia getting numbers forward all of a sudden, and they win a corner.
Konsa gets up well to head out and he now leads the counter, with Rashford charging down the left.
Finds Kane on the overlap, his ball into the box is blocked.
England 2-0 Latvia
21:15 , Matt Verri70 mins: Spell of possession for Latvia after that second goal.
Would be good to see England really push on now and try and finish this match with a flourish, after a fairly sluggish half.
GOAL! England 2-0 Latvia | Harry Kane 68'
21:13 , Matt VerriKane has his 71st England goal!
Rice makes the run into the box, drills it low across the face of goal and Kane is there at the back post for a tap-in.
England 1-0 Latvia
21:12 , Matt Verri67 mins: Inevitable that Bellingham would come off at some point, after just about avoiding a red card earlier in the half.
Foden on to replace him.
England 1-0 Latvia
21:11 , Matt Verri66 mins: Eze curls a nice ball into the back post, Kane hadn’t quite made the run though and it’s out for a goal-kick.
Better signs for England in the last few minutes.
England 1-0 Latvia
21:08 , Matt Verri63 mins: Should be 2-0!
Bellingham rolls the ball into Kane’s path, shifts it onto his left foot and curls it... just wide!
Goalkeeper didn’t move.
England 1-0 Latvia
21:07 , Matt Verri62 mins: Lovely bit of skill from Rogers to turn his man, wins a corner.
Kane goes down after some shoving, referee waves away those appeals. All very scrappy from England at the moment.
England 1-0 Latvia
21:05 , Matt Verri60 mins: Not sure the switching of Bowen and Rashford has really worked. Neither having much of an impact this half.
Bowen tries to change that, decent ball in this time but nobody there for England.
And his match is now done - Eze on for the final half an hour.
Dom Smith at Wembley
21:02 , Matt VerriQuite a disrupted rhythm to the first 12 minutes of this second half, which England have dominated when the ball has actually been in play.
England 1-0 Latvia
21:01 , Matt Verri56 mins: Bellingham is very, very lucky.
It’s a wild hack of a challenge, and he’s already on a yellow card.
Could easily have been sent off for that. Latvia’s protests ignored.
England 1-0 Latvia
20:59 , Matt Verri54 mins: England corner, as Rashford’s cross is deflected behind.
Rice with the out-swinger, Latvia deal with this one. Bowen then launches a cross over everyone and straight out.
England 1-0 Latvia
20:57 , Matt Verri52 mins: Bit of a delay, with Savalnieks needing some treatment.
It’s been a very low-key start to this half.
England 1-0 Latvia
20:55 , Matt Verri50 mins: Tuchel looking fairly frustrated.
Bellingham loses it on the edge of the Latvia box, the visitors play it long and Guehi then can’t keep it in play, conceding the throw-in.
His manager is not thrilled.
England 1-0 Latvia
20:52 , Matt Verri47 mins: Bowen and Rashford have swapped wings, will give them more of a threat going on the outside of the full-backs.
Lewis-Skelly and Bellingham very nearly combine brilliantly, but the midfielder can’t quite get on the end of Lewis-Skelly’s through ball.
Back underway!
20:50 , Matt VerriUp and running in the second-half!
First-half stats
20:47 , Matt Verri17 shots for England.
Nearly 80% of the ball, which certainly isn’t a surprise.
Rashford has been a real threat out on the left, but his final ball hasn’t quite been up to it. Bellingham bright too.
Moment of magic
20:37 , Matt VerriHere is that free-kick.
Over the wall, into the top corner... and basically no celebration!
It's simply MAGNIFICENT! 💥

HT: England 1-0 Latvia
20:34 , Matt VerriKonsa back up and fine to continue.
Bowen has a run at his man, cut-back picks out Rogers and it’s a good save at the near post to deny him.
That’s half-time at Wembley, England in front through that James free-kick.
Basically all their best moments came from crosses and set-pieces.

England 1-0 Latvia
20:31 , Matt Verri45 mins: Two minutes added on.
Might be a bit more than that, because Konsa needs some treatment. Got a shove from Gutkovskis out wide and has stayed down.
England 1-0 Latvia
20:29 , Matt Verri44 mins: Nice move from Latvia, gets down away down their left.
It comes to Jaunzems, 25 yards out and in a lot of space. Good strike, but straight at Pickford.
England 1-0 Latvia
20:28 , Matt Verri42 mins: First yellow card of the match and it goes to Bellingham. Told you he was heavily involved.
Should have played a pass through to Kane in the box, but changed his mind at the last minute and then lunged in to try and win the ball back.
England 1-0 Latvia
20:26 , Matt Verri40 mins: Five minutes or so now for England to really go at Latvia and see if they can get a second.
Bellingham beats a couple of defenders, before the third brings him down. He’s been heavily involved, as ever.
Dom Smith at Wembley
20:24 , Matt VerriWell it was starting to look like it might take something quite special. That certainly falls into the category, bent superbly into the corner.
It's James's first England goal, and every replay of it on the big screen gets its own cheer.
GOAL! England 1-0 Latvia | Reece James 38'
20:24 , Matt VerriIt will be James or Bowen.
It’s James... AND IT’S 1-0!
Over the wall, goalkeeper gives up on it early. Stunning free-kick.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:22 , Matt Verri37 mins: Rashford lays it back to Bellingham, dummy beats two defenders but Latvia still have enough in the box to make the block.
Lewis-Skelly then brought down 30 yards out, maybe a bit less. Imagine there will be a fair few who fancy this.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:20 , Matt Verri35 mins: Bowen gets a kick out wide, free-kick for England and up come the centre-backs again.
It will be Bowen with the in-swinger. Once again it’s Bellingham who wins the header in the middle, and once again he can’t hit the target.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:19 , Matt Verri33 mins: Without wishing to go full ‘lump it long’... not really sure why Latvia are trying to play out from goal-kicks. It won’t end well.
To be fair to them, though, not sure many would have expected it to still be 0-0 at this stage.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:17 , Matt Verri32 mins: Rashford in behind, goes on the outside and forces the goalkeeper into action at his near post.
Latest cross then drops for Kane, shot on the swivel is blocked. Every cross feels like it could lead to a goal.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:16 , Matt Verri30 mins: Rashford sits down his man on the left, drilled cross is turned behind. Another corner.
Six-man wrestling match ongoing in the middle, as Rice eventually swings it in. Poor ball, easily claimed by the goalkeeper.
Malik Ouzia at Wembley
20:15 , Matt VerriSome good pressure building now from England, who are causing problems out wide and from set-pieces.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:15 , Matt Verri29 mins: Third England corner of the match coming up. They should have scored from the first two.
Rice to the near post this time, think Kane did get a flick but not enough of a touch.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:14 , Matt Verri28 mins: Long, long VAR check here. A couple of minutes.
There is contact on Bowen from Zviedris, but not sure there is enough for a penalty.
This is taking a ridiculous amount of time - eventually play is waved on.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:12 , Matt Verri26 mins: Patient from England in midfield, working it from side to side.
Cross is then dropped by the goalkeeper, falls for Bowen and he thinks he’s been brought down.
No penalty given, as Rogers instead has a shot charged down.
Dom Smith at Wembley
20:11 , Matt VerriEngland guilty of missing a fair few chances already, including Bellingham, Konsa -- albeit, what a save -- and now Kane with that header.
Latvia are 140th in the world and should, really, be behind.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:09 , Matt Verri24 mins: The chances are coming now for England. And nearly all of them from crosses into the box.
James on the overlap, stands it up to the back post. Kane is free, but he nods over the bar. Should probably have scored.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:08 , Matt Verri22 mins: Another corner coming up.
Rice again delivers a perfect ball in, Bellingham can’t hit the target with the header. That’s a real chance once more.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:07 , Matt Verri21 mins: Rogers skips away from his man out wide, decent ball in and it’s turned behind for a corner.
No Burn for Rice to aim for this time.
Free header for Bellingham, hits Rashford and falls into Konsa’s path... brilliant save to deny him! Great reflexes.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:05 , Matt Verri19 mins: Rashford goes on the outside in the box, sliding challenge... and down goes Rashford.
Big penalty appeals, referee not interested. And VAR confirms that decision.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:04 , Matt Verri18 mins: WOW.
Latvia should probably be in front!
Ball over the top of the England defence, Guehi and Pickford make a complete mess of it and Gutkovskis has an open goal from a tight angle.
Can’t hit the target.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:03 , Matt Verri17 mins: Ball drops for Rogers in the box, again there’s a mass of red shirts in the way.
Bowen is there on the rebound, catches the strike well but it flies wide.
England 0-0 Latvia
20:00 , Matt Verri14 mins: Rashford keen to swing in the crosses at every opportunity.
Goes deep with this one, Bowen is there at the back post but the ball just bounces off him and behind for a goal-kick.
England 0-0 Latvia
19:57 , Matt Verri12 mins: First corner of the match and it’s won by Latvia. Sure you all expected that.
Konsa gets a shove in the middle, cheap free-kick. Might be another hour until Latvia get in the box again, could have done with making more of that.
England 0-0 Latvia
19:56 , Matt Verri10 mins: Starting to look more dangerous, the hosts.
Rice and Bellingham with a couple of shots from the edge of the area, both charged down.
Rashford is getting space on the left, the threat has been out wide.
Dan Kilpatrick at Wembley
19:55 , Matt VerriMyles Lewis-Skelly is inverting into midfield when England have the ball (always), freeing up Morgan Rogers to push forward.
It's a fluid system, which may go some way to solving England's historic problem with finding a balance in midfield.
England 0-0 Latvia
19:54 , Matt Verri8 mins: James balloons a cross over everyone, Rashford keeps it in play.
Tries to play in Lewis-Skelly on the overlap, but doesn’t come off. England yet to really get anything going in the final third.
England 0-0 Latvia
19:51 , Matt Verri5 mins: James has absolutely cleaned out Ciganiks in the air.
Right in front of Tuchel, who immediately puts his head in his hands. James would have been in trouble if this was a rugby match... as it is, just a warning.
Malik Ouzia at Wembley
19:50 , Matt VerriMarcus Rashford has a run at his full-back at the very first opportunity.
He ends up giving away a free-kick, but clearly is keen to show the message from Tuchel has been heard.
England 0-0 Latvia
19:48 , Matt Verri3 mins: You won’t be stunned to hear Latvia are getting everyone behind the ball.
Lewis-Skelly dropping into midfield, so it’s a back three in possession for England.
Rashford with a nice reverse pass in behind the defence, but Bellingham can’t quite get there.
Dom Smith at Wembley
19:47 , Matt VerriNot a fan of the colour scheme of Latvia's shirts, which resemble a packet of Kenco coffee.
KICK-OFF!
19:45 , Matt VerriUp and running at Wembley!
Here we go!
19:41 , Matt VerriThe teams are out onto the pitch.
Latvia edged past Andorra in a 1-0 win on Friday, a rare victory for them.
England really should be turning on the style tonight.
Malik Ouzia at Wembley
19:40 , Matt VerriThe stadium PA appears to have half packed in midway through what is supposed to be a rousing pre-match pyrotechnics routine.
It now sounds like someone’s playing the music out of an iPhone stuck in a cup.
The ground is half empty, too.
James backed to deliver
19:38 , Matt VerriThomas Tuchel is confident Reece James’ fitness is up to starting tonight for England.
“An amazing football players first of all - everything that it takes at the highest level,” the England boss says when asked about James’ strengths.
“He trained for several weeks without any problems... now we give him a start.”
Tuchel full of praise for Lewis-Skelly
19:28 , Matt VerriEngland head coach Thomas Tuchel says he has "fallen in love" with Myles Lewis-Skelly as the left-back capped his Three Lions debut with a goal.
The Arsenal defender was given the nod to start as England began their qualifying campaign for the 2026 World Cup against Albania and took just 20 minutes to make his mark.
Lewis-Skelly repaid Tuchel's faith when meeting a superb Jude Bellingham pass with a fine finish, becoming the youngest England player to score on his debut at the age of 18 years and 176 days. He was named man of the match after the game.
Speaking after the game, Tuchel was full of praise for Lewis-Skelly having spent the week casting his eye over the youngster.
"He is an amazing player," Tuchel told ITV. "Amazing personality.
"He came into camp and showed straight away that it's normal to fall in love with him. It is well deserved."

Pre-match thoughts from Wembley...
19:18 , Matt VerriBig night for Morgan Rogers - could be a really exciting partnership with Jude Bellingham.
"The inclusion of Morgan Rogers is exciting."

Tuchel: Latvia difficult to predict
19:10 , Matt VerriThomas Tuchel has been speaking ahead of kick-off, saying England are the clear favourites.
Even that’s probably an understatement - Latvia finished bottom of their Nations League group, which consisted of North Macedonia, Armenia and the Faroe Islands
"I think we are clear favourites,” Tuchel says.
“I think it will be difficult to predict exactly what Latvia is doing. They’re facing a new level of opponent with us.”
Malik Ouzia at Wembley
19:02 , Matt VerriI thought that Marcus Rashford’s England recall had perhaps come a little prematurely given he’s not actually scored since signing for Villa on loan in January, for all his performances have clearly improved.
Reece James might be in a similar category, having been managed quite carefully by Chelsea since his return from his latest hamstring injury, but Thomas Tuchel was probably always going to turn to him if fit and there have been injuries to others at right-back.
He’s played a decent share of his minutes in the midfield over the last month, but is back in more familiar territory this evening.

Dom Smith at Wembley
18:51 , Matt VerriWill be interesting to see how Morgan Rogers gets on tonight, on the occasion of his first start and only fourth cap for England.
The 22-year-old is enjoying a magnificent season with Aston Villa and looks set to play across the midfield four in a 4-1-4-1 system tonight.
I fancy this start might have gone to Chelsea's Cole Palmer if he were fit, so it's up to Rogers to make it count against limited opposition.
Tuchel: A pleasure to work with Bellingham
18:43Thomas Tuchel has urged more positional discipline from his England players and pledged to help Jude Bellingham “channel his emotions”.
Tuchel’s tenure as England manager began on Friday night as England won 2-0 in front of more than 82,000 at Wembley in their first qualifier on the road to the 2026 World Cup.
Debutant Myles Lewis-Skelly and captain Harry Kane scored either side of the break in a match England deserved to win but which also offered room for improvement in terms of performance.
Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham assisted the opening goal and put in a tireless display against Albania, and Tuchel was quizzed on how he can get the best out of the 21-year-old.
“I think he is a key player for us and will be a key player, and is happy to take the responsibility,” Tuchel said. “He’s a team player and is absolutely open to giving everything for the team.
“He is always able to make the difference, so we need to find the structure and the space to make the most of it. It’s a pleasure to work with him.
“We need to help him within a structure [so] that he can play more economically and still have the same impact or maybe even more impact. We need to make sure that the leaders and the main players walk in the same direction and help each other out, play a bit more disciplined to save some energy for decisive moments.”

Latvia team news
18:36Starting XI: Zviedris, Balodis, Cernomordijs, Gutkovskis, Ikaunieks, Savalnieks, Jurkovskis, Ciganiks, Zelenkovs, Jaunzems, Saveljevs.
Subs: Ozols, Matrevics, Jagodinskis, Sliede, Isajevs, Daskevics, Vapne, Sits, Krollis, Melniks, Tonisevs.
Tuchel opts for Guehi in defence
18:29 , Matt VerriThe inclusion of Dan Burn ahead of Marc Guehi against Albania was arguably the biggest surprise in Thomas Tuchel's first England XI.
Marc Guehi established himself as an England regular towards the end of Gareth Southgate's tenure, and was among their most consistent players at Euro 2024.
With both Harry Maguire and John Stones sidelined through injury this month, the Crystal Palace centre-half - who has attracted big-money bids from Newcastle and Tottenham in the past year - was a seemingly obvious candidate to keep his place under Tuchel.
Instead, Burn became England's oldest full debutant in 15 years, while Ezri Konsa partnered him at the back in what appeared to be a complete upheaval of the defensive hierarchy.
Burn, though, was very shaky defensively against Albania, particularly in the second half, and Tuchel has opted to give Guehi a chance to impress tonight.
England team news
18:21 , Matt VerriStarting XI: Pickford; James, Guehi, Konsa, Lewis-Skelly; Rice, Rogers, Bellingham; Bowen, Kane, Rashford
Subs: Trafford, Henderson, Burn, Walker, Colwill, Quansah, Jones, Henderson, Gibbs-White, Eze, Foden, Solanke
Rogers to get chance?
18:09 , Matt VerriThomas Tuchel was mildly critical of the performances of wingers Phil Foden and Marcus Rashford against Albania, saying the pair were not as impactful as they normally are at club level - although suggested the whole team was partly at fault for the quality of their service.
With Bukayo Saka, Cole Palmer and now Anthony Gordon, who has withdrawn from the squad after picking up a hip injury on Friday, all unavailable, the German is short of England's usual glittering array of options in the front line.
Jarrod Bowen is pushing for a start if Tuchel decides to rotate his wingers, while Morgan Rogers, who was a late substitute on Friday, is also in the frame, having lined up on the right of the front line in three of Aston Villa's last four matches.
Rogers made his first England appearances as a sub in the Nations League games against Greece and Ireland in November and has been on fine form for Villa in a variety of positions this season.
With Jude Bellingham, Foden and Palmer all likely to be ahead of him in the pecking order at No10, playing wide for England appears to be the 22-year-old's best route to significant minutes under Tuchel.

Stage is set!

Tuchel makes rotation stance clear
17:53 , Matt VerriThomas Tuchel has warned Premier League coaches that he will not spare their star players from England duty - and says Arsenal’s use of Declan Rice justifies his stance.
The German has promised a degree of rotation for tonight’s clash, but with only six international breaks between now and next summer’s tournament, knows he cannot afford to waste any opportunity to prepare his team.
The club vs country tensions that had largely eased under Gareth Southgate, before re-emerging during Lee Carsley’s interim reign, could therefore surface once more but Tuchel is prepared to face that possibility down.
“‘I know that this window, this camp, is where the clubs play a very crucial time of the season,” Tuchel said. "They play for championships, they play for quarter-finals in the Champions League.
“We are very well aware of it but we have also our own goals, we have our own targets. The players are keen to play and it has to be like this.
He added: “After a 7-1 first leg and Declan Rice played the next match with Arsenal, I didn’t have the feeling that they think so much about us.
“‘I don’t think we have to break our heads about this. I take care about the players. We take care about the schedule, but it would be the wrong signal to tell players now, ‘Hey, you have tough matches coming up, so I rest you now’."

Standard Sport prediction
17:42 , Matt VerriThe Albania game was widely regarded as the tougher test of Tuchel’s opening matches in charge. With England coming through that with relative ease, it bodes well for the visit of Latvia, who simply don’t possess nearly enough quality in their ranks to pose a threat.
Even if Tuchel opts to rotate his squad, England should win this comfortably, extending their perfect record under the German.
England to win, 4-0.
England team news
17:33 , Matt VerriAnthony Gordon has now returned to Newcastle after suffering a hip issue in the closing moments of England’s win over Albania, so will play no part against Latvia.
In his absence, and given the underwhelming performances of Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden, Jarrod Bowen could come in and Eberechi Eze will be pushing for minutes.
Morgan Gibbs-White and Jarell Quansah are in the matchday 23 having been among the trio left out on Friday, though Aaron Ramsdale misses out again along with Newcastle full-back Tino Livramento.
Further back, Marc Guehi will be hoping for an opportunity after being overlooked against Albania in favour of debutant Dan Burn. Ezri Konsa was a standout on Friday, so should keep his place.
Myles Lewis-Skelly should also be handed another start after a fine, goalscoring first game in an England shirt.
Predicted England XI: Pickford; James, Konsa, Guehi, Lewis-Skelly; Rogers, Rice, Bellingham; Foden, Kane, Rashford
