England vs Italy: Sarina Wiegman rules Fran Kirby out of Lionesses friendly

Sarina Wiegman says Fran Kirby has a minor knee injury after she was forced to pull out of the Lionesses squad for Tuesday’s friendly against Italy.

Kirby had been due to start England’s friendly with Austria on Friday, but she pulled up during the warm-up.

The Chelsea midfielder was replaced by Ella Toone in the starting XI and the Lionesses went on to win 7-2.

Kirby has now flown home from England’s training camp in Spain, where they face Italy on Tuesday night, but Wiegman insisted this morning her knee injury is not serous.

“She is well, but she went home, she went back to Chelsea,” said Wiegman.

“She had some irritation on her knee. It’s a minor injury, but we didn’t want to take any risk so she is being assessed at her club. We don’t expect it to be a bad injury.

“She was available for us and she would have started [on Friday], but she wasn’t able to, which is a disappointment.

“Moving forward we will see how things develop and I hope she will be on the pitch quick, and I am positive about that.”

Chloe Kelly missed England’s win over Austria on Friday, but she should be back in the squad for the game with Italy. The winger had missed some of England’s training sessions last week with a knock.

“She is good,” said Wiegman. “She was flying in training, so hopefully that is what she will do later on this morning and be ready for tomorrow.”
