England vs Ireland pitch invader who joins national anthem rugby tackled by security

The heavy hits weren't limited to just the players in Saturday's Six Nations duel between England and Ireland as one pitch invader suffered a brutal tackle prior to kick-off.

Both teams were lined up for the national anthems when a supporter dressed in full England kit made his way onto the turf in an attempt to link up with the players.

However, security were wise to the act and unleashed a thunderous spear tackle on the culprit, reducing him to a heap on the floor before escorting him off the field.

The fan in question was clearly hurt by the incident as he struggled to get back to his feet, though the stewards were more than happy to help him off the field.

That was just one event in a fast and furious start to Saturday's Test, in which England lock Charlie Ewels received one of the fastest red cards in Six Nations history after only 82 seconds.

Ireland made the most of their advantage and scored first-half tries through Leinster duo Jame Lowe and Hugo Keenan to lead 15-9 at the break.

It's not the first time in recent months that a pitch invader has caused a ruckus at the rugby, with Wales denied a scoring opportunity against South Africa in November due to an interloper.

Full-back Liam Williams appeared to be a shoo-in to score against the Springboks before the supporter wombled onto the field, but the opportunity went begging after he was forced to adjust.

It was fortunate Saturday's incident unfolded prior to kick-off, meaning the intruder was unable to influence the game in any way.

Spectators will have been pleased to see the Twickenham security team working so effectively, sending the pitch invader flying out of the anthem line-up even more quickly than he entered.

There may be some natural concern as to how he was permitted to join the line-up in the first place, however.

England and Ireland entered Saturday's showdown knowing defeat at Headquarters would spell the end of their Six Nations title hopes, with Eddie Jones' men set to meet leaders France in Paris next Saturday.
