Ashes 3rd Test preview

England and Australia meet for the 3rd Test in Leeds for what is sure to be a fiery encounter after an eventful five days in London.

Captain Ben Stokes looked like he was going to pull off another miracle batting performance on the final day at Lord's last weekend, but his astonishing tally of 155, which included nine sixes, was rather overshadowed by the controversial stumping of Jonny Bairstow. The 33-year-old was given out after leaving his crease before the umpire had called the end of the over, sparking furious scenes in the Long Room, but England head coach Brendon McCullum has said the perceived injustice will only galvanise his team as they seek their first win of the series.

Australia will have to make do without Nathan Lyon after he injured his leg on day two at Lord's, with the off-spinner returning home to begin treatment on a calf tear. The 35-year-old took eight wickets in the First Test at Edgbaston and dismissed Zak Crawley on the opening day at Lord's to take his career total to 496, so likely replacement Todd Murphy has a lot to live up to.

Matt Renshaw has also been released from the squad, while England's vice-captain Ollie Pope has withdrawn after dislocating his shoulder while fielding during the Second Test. Essex's Dan Lawrence, who has not been called upon since March 2022, is the expected replacement.
