England to pay respects to the Queen ahead of Wembley clash vs Germany

England will pay its official respects to the Queen before this month’s match with Germany at Wembley.

The Nations League fixture on Monday, September 26, will be the game when Gareth Southgate and his players can lead the tributes at the national stadium.

Football Association bosses are still to decide and confirm the full details but there will be a minute’s silence and they are certain to wear black armbands. Other sporting venues have also shown big screen tributes, pictures and montages of the Queen this weekend to pay their respects.

England travel to Italy on Friday, September 23, for their other Nations League game this month with players likely to wear armbands and there may be a period of respect before kick-off.

The Germany game is a high-profile fixture and the respects are certain to make a big impact.

FA bosses have been criticised for calling off grassroots football this weekend because that has stopped millions of kids playing games. But their reasoning was that the Queen was patron of the Football Association and Duke of Cambridge, Prince William, has been president.

It was because of that connection that the FA felt it should pay respect to the passing of the Queen by postponing fixtures.

But while they decided to stop organised fixtures, they do not see that as a reason for youngsters to stay at home. They will now have discussions over whether King Charles becomes patron or whether a change is needed in the next few days.

FA Trophy fixtures from tomorrow will go ahead as the period of mourning finishes.

FA chiefs also felt it was important that football presented a united front with the Premier League and EFL and that once one decided to postpone games that the rest of the national sport fell into line.
