England to honour Sven-Goran Eriksson with tribute ahead of Finland clash at Wembley

Sven-Goran Eriksson will be honoured with a Wembley tribute tonight.

The Swede was England’s first foreign manager, between 2001 and 2006, but died last month, aged 76, from pancreatic cancer.

A video tribute will be shown on the big screen before England face Finland, and players will wear black armbands, as they did in Saturday’s 2-0 win in Ireland.

There will be a period of applause before kick-off, when the recent deaths of Craig Shakespeare, Kevin Campbell and Tommy Banks will also be acknowledged.

Harry Kane said of Eriksson on Monday: “I’d say he’s one of our most famous, most popular managers. It will be a sad night for a lot of England fans and a lot of players.

“I didn’t get to meet him personally, [but] a great person, really loyal to his players. I think he’ll go down as one of England’s best. We just wish all his family and friends our condolences, and we hope we can pay a good tribute.”

Interim head coach Lee Carsley said: “I was never lucky enough to meet him. I played against his teams a few times. Speaking to Ashley [Cole, England’s assistant manager], who played under him, what he speaks mostly about is what a great person he was.

“He was a highly-decorated coach, and the period he had with England, everyone speaks about the atmosphere and how much they enjoyed playing for him. He’ll be remembered fondly by everyone.”
