England sweat on Dawid Malan fitness after booking spot in T20 World Cup semi-finals

England are sweating over the fitness of Dawid Malan after he limped off with a groin injury in their tense victory over Sri Lanka.

The win earned England a spot in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup, where they are likely to face India, but they could be without Malan for the remainder of the tournament. The 35-year-old pulled up lame on the midwicket boundary while fielding and was helped off the field by Ben Stokes.

Malan did not bat in England's nervy chase, but captain Jos Buttler said after the match that he would have if they had lost a seventh wicket.

And when asked about the severity of the injury, Buttler told BBC Test Match Special: "It's too early to tell, but fingers crossed he'll pull up well.

"He would have batted if he needed to. Running would have been difficult but he would have gone out there."

England only have one spare batter in their squad in Phil Salt and none listed among the travelling reserves should Malan's injury rule him out for the rest of the World Cup.

And ex-England all-rounder Ravi Bopara, who spent two years playing alongside Salt at Sussex, believes the 26-year-old would be a perfect addition to this side.

"Phil Salt is the obvious one to bring if Dawid Malan cannot play the semi-final," he told Test Match Special. "I don't think that's a bad move for England.

"He's not the type of guy who needs warm-up games, and will just strike it out the middle of the bat. He will not think about things too much. It could be a good move for England."
