England’s 'unhealthiest areas' revealed but one major city is nowhere to be seen

The unhealthiest areas in England have been revealed with London, Sheffield and Newcastle escaping the top 10.

Most of England's largest cities feature on the list, which came from the latest health index from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Blackpool scored the lowest, making it the unhealthiest area in England, according to the report.

While the capital did not appear among the least healthy places, the country's second biggest city Manchester took second place.

This was followed by its not-too-distant neighbour Hull in third place.

In a new study, fitness expert BarBend analysed the ONS data which scored every local authority in England.

This was based on a number of factors for physical health, mental health, fitness, and more, compared with the national average to see which areas were the ‘most unhealthy’.

While Blackpool scored highest overall, at 91.43, it was overtaken by Hull in one particular category.

Hull ranked highest for unhealthy places, at 95.44, closely followed by Manchester, at 95.96.

However, Blackpool took the undesirable top position when it came to most unhealthy people and worst unhealthy lives.

Its low healthy people score was impacted by a low life expectancy score and low avoidable mortality score.

While its low healthy lives score was affected by factors such as alcohol misuse, and a lack of healthy eating.

In second place, Manchester had an overall score of 92.53.

This is partly affected by its low healthy people score due to things like low life expectancy and low avoidable mortality.

It also had a poor child obesity score compared with other areas.

Coming in third place, Hull received an overall health score of 93.09.

Its healthy people score was low due to factors such as poor difficulty in daily life and poor frailty.

The area also has a lower healthy lives score due to smoking and a lack of healthy eating.

Commenting on the findings, a Barbend spokesperson said: "It’s interesting to see just how many factors go into the health index, and how poorly some areas score in them.

"When data for after the COVID-19 pandemic is prepared, it’s expected that many of these factors, particularly physical and mental health, will fluctuate due to the true unexpectedness of it."

The study was conducted by BarBend, which offers a range of fitness and health advice and links to top gym equipment and products.
