England Euro 2022 star Lucy Bronze notched her first goal for Barcelona with a diving header from a corner to help fire the reigning league champions to a 6-1 rout over Atletico Madrid in the Primera Division.
The right-back joined Barcelona from Manchester City before the summer’s Euros triumph with England's Lionesses and has played a consistent role in Jonatan Giráldez’s side who sit top of the Spanish league with a 10-game winning streak. Bronze has also helped Barca extend their unbeaten run in the Women’s Champions League earlier this week following a 3-0 victory over Bayern Munich at the Camp Nou.
Bronze in particular put on a show for the record 46,967 in attendance, linking up well with former Manchester City teammate Kiera Walsh. The pair became the first English players to represent Barcelona at the Camp Nou since Gary Lineker in 1989.
And Bronze continued her stellar form in a Barca shirt by registering her first goal for the Spanish giants on Monday night after making a late run into the box and meeting Laia Codina’s second-half corner with a spectacular diving header to send her side into a 3-1 lead.
The 31-year-old defender had barely peeled herself up off the grass before her Barca teammates surrounded her in celebration. A brace from Salma Celeste Paralluelo Ayingono and a final flourish from Ingrid Syrstad Engen sealed an emphatic 6-1 league victory for Barca, who now boast a goal difference of 40.
Bronze was absent from the Lionesses’ final matches of the year after testing positive for Covid-19 before the penultimate match against Japan. The England star started both of England’s previous matches, in the goalless draw to Czech Republic and the statement 2-1 victory over the reigning world champions USA.
Barca return to action on 3 December when they face fifth-place Sociedad in the league.
