England players were booed by some parts of the Puskas Arena as they took the knee ahead of their Nations League match against Hungary on Saturday.
The match in Budapest was officially classed as a behind closed doors fixture as a punishment for the “racist and discriminatory” behaviour of Hungary fans at Euro 2020.
Under UEFA rules, however, the Hungarian FA were able to invite school children, accompanied by some adults, to the game with a crowd of 35,000 in attendance at the 67,000-capacity stadium.
As has been customary since football returned from its Covid lockdown in 2020, England players took the knee before kick-off as a show of solidarity against all forms of racism and discrimination and the gesture was met with some boos from sections of the crowd.
The incident is likely to lead to scrutiny over UEFA’s rules regarding behind-closed-doors games.
England manager Gareth Southgate had admitted before the match that he was “surprised” at the number of fans that would be in attendance.
