England player ratings vs USA – Maguire steps up again, Sterling, Mount and Saka all struggle

Jordan Pickford

The England goalkeeper was beaten by Christian Pulisic's first-half effort, but the crossbar came to his rescue. Didn't have too much to do in the second half despite the number of occasions the USA managed to get into the England final third. 5

Kieran Trippier

Uncharistically poor in possession in the first half and struggled against the duel threat of full-back Antonee Robinson and Pulisic. Trippier wasn't able to advance forward for much of the contest and that limited his impact on the game. 5

John Stones

England's most secure passer in the opening period but the Manchester City centre-back struggled to get the ball through the USA press. Stones defended well when called upon. 6

Harry Maguire

Always delivers in an England shirt – and Maguire was very much needed this evening. The Manchester United captain headed clear corner after corner in the second period and was good positionally to help keep the United States at bay over the 90 minutes. 7

Luke Shaw

Much like Trippier on the opposite flank, Shaw offered very little in the way of an attacking threat. The only occasion the full-back did create a chance for Bukayo Saka, who skied a shot well over. Was tested by Sergino Dest and Timothy Weah. 5

Declan Rice

The deepest of the midfield three, Rice was unable to help England progress the ball as he was crowded out by the narrow system deployed by Gregg Berhalter. The West Ham United captain did make several important clearances on the edge of his own box to stop USA attacks. 6

Jude Bellingham

Started authoritatively and drove forward to help construct England's first chance of the contest for Harry Kane. Had too much ground to cover as the match progressed as the USMNT played around the Three Lions midfield. The 19-year-old was replaced in the 68th minute. 6

Mason Mount

It was no surprise to see Mount keep his place in the side – the Chelsea midfielder was England's link player against Iran and helped the Three Lions dominate in the final third. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to repeat that performance against the U.S. Mount's touch was poor and passing sloppy. It was a tired display but he did at least force Matt Turner into a save in the first half. 5

Raheem Sterling

The Chelsea winger has often stepped up when needed for England but he was on the fringes throughout the contest. Sterling didn't have a chance of note – nor fashioned one for his teammates. Was replaced in the 68th minute and went straight down the tunnel. 5

Harry Kane

Having failed to score in the 6-2 win over Iran on Monday, Kane would have wanted to get off the mark at this World Cup. He did have an early shot inside the box that was deflected wide but barely saw the ball in the final third after that. A late free-kick from Shaw did offer Kane an opportunity but he headed wide. 5

Bukayo Saka

Came into the game having scored twice against Iran and fashioned Kane's early opportunity with a smart cutback. However, Saka's influence then waned as he struggled to keep up with Robinson down the USA left. Was brought off late on for Marcus Rashford. 5

England substitutes

Jordan Henderson (for Jude Bellingham, 68)

Gave England a better midfield balance but offered little. 5

Jack Grealish (for Raheem Sterling, 68)

Produced one eye-catching run into the box but saw the attack break down. 5

Marcus Rashford (for Bukayo Saka, 78)

Didn't have enough time to make an impact. N/A
